Botswana - Renew Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

- The application to renew a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) shall be submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) head office, not later than fourteen (14) working days prior to the date of expiry of the current license. CAAB Contact Details.
- The application shall be made in writing in such a manner as prescribed by the CAAB office and shall be accompanied by all the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page and submitted to the CAAB head office, Personal Licensing unit for consideration, only if the applicant is a holder of a valid medical certificate or after ascertaining that your medical assessment has been assessed as “fit” by the Civil Aviation Medical Board (CAMB). This will be certified in the Aviation Medical Assessment application form. Any omission of the required information or documents will render the application process incomplete.
- Upon receipt of the application, the Personal Licensing officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
- If the Personal Licensing officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application for the license, the application is registered for processing and consideration.
- Applicants will be required to pay prescribed license fees as per the CAAB Fees Schedule, (refer to the “Fees” section of this page), which is payable either in cash at the CAAB cashier counter/accounts office or by cheque in favour of the CAAB.
- The applicant is issued with a payment slip and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
- After successful processing of the submitted documents, when all regulatory requirements for approval of the license are satisfactorily met, the CAAB Personal Licensing officer shall prepare the renewed license that shall be valid for ten (10) years from the date of issue, which indicate the approval scope and limitations.
- Notice of the decision (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) for the application will be communicated to the applicant by phone or mail after fourteen (14) working days of submitting the application.
- Proceed to the CAAB personal registration and license office and present the acknowledgment letter and identity document and proof of payment of the license fee to be validated by the licensing office, applicant will be required to surrender their expired license before being issued with the renewed license.

EligibilityEdit
- The applicant should be in possession of a valid/ expired commercial pilot license (CPL).
- An application for license renewal will not be considered unless the applicant holds a valid Medical Certificate.
- The applicant has passed all Knowledge Tests/Examinations Passed and skills tests (as per Civil Aviation Personnel Licensing requirements).

Renewal of a Lapsed Commercial Pilot License
- Where a license has not been renewed by the date of expiry, the validity of the license standards has lapsed.
To renew a lapsed Commercial Pilot’s license; the license holder shall meet the requirements subject to the lapsed periods as follows:
- Less than six months and all renewal requirements were met prior to the date of expiry; there are no additional requirements;
- More than six (6) months but not more than three (3) years:
- Pass a written examination in Air Law or Regulations.
- Pass a type rating practical check-out on an aircraft type endorsed or on the type rating sought.
- Meet the renewal requirements.
- More than three (3) years but not more than 10 years:
- Undertake a refresher course in an ATO in preparation for the practical and knowledge tests which should include ten (10) hours as PIC.
- Pass a CPL practical test (GFT) on the aircraft type rating being sought.
- Pass a CPL composite knowledge examination.
- Meet the renewal requirements.
- For more than ten (10) years, an applicant shall meet all requirements for the initial issue of a CPL.
