Botswana - Registration and Control of Pesticide (Insecticide)

Apply In Person
- The application to register and Control of Pesticide (Insecticide) shall be made to the Division of Plant Protection Office in Sebele or the nearest District Crop Production Office (DCPO). DCPO Contact Details and Office Location.
- The application shall be made in writing using a prescribed Form-1, obtainable at Division of Plant Protection Office in Sebele or the nearest DCPO office.
- The completed application form shall be accompanied by –
- Two samples of the agrochemical (Inscticide).
- Any advertising material or experimental data in support of efficacy of the agrochemical.
- Full toxicological data of the agrochemical.
- Methods of analysis of the agrochemical.
- Residue and phytotoxicity data of the agrochemical under Botswana or similar conditions.
- On submission of the application file, the DCPO office will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
- If the officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application for the registration certificate, the application is registered.
- Applicants will be advised to pay a prescribed fees of BWP 500.00 and obtain a payment slip and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
- All application submitted at the DCPO office will be forwarded to the Division of Plant Protection Office in Sebele for processing and consideration.
- Upon receipt of the application file, the registrar shall evaluate each application as per the submitted documents and samples and shall consult the committee.
- After a successful evaluation phase, when all regulatory requirements for approval of the certificate are satisfactorily met, the registrar shall register the insectcide and prepare the registration certificate that shall be valid for a period of five (5) years, which indicate the approval scope and limitations.
- A notice of the decision (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) for the application will be communicated to the applicant by DCPO office either by phone or mail or letter, within 10 working days of the registrar making the decision.
- If approved, proceed to the specific office where the application was filed and present the acknowledgment letter and identity document and proof of payment of the certificate fee to be validated by the office and collect the certificate.

Applicants must satisfy the following list of requirements to qualify for this service:
- Must be aged 18 years and above.
- Applicant must have an Agrochemical Course Certificate.
- All agencies dealing in insecticides and pesticides activities in Botswana are eligible
FeesEdit
- Registartion Certificate fee of BWP 500.00.
ValidityEdit
- The registration certificate shall be valid for five (5) years from the date of issue, unless, suspended, cancelled or revoked by the authority.
- The certificate should be renewed on time at a fee of BWP 250.00, late renewal of the certificate shall attract an addition fee of BWP 50.00 in additional to the renewal fee.

- Once all the relevant documents are submitted and inspection conducted at the warehouse, the certificate can be issued in 10 working days.

- Registration and control of Pesticide is an important legal requirement all over the world. Every government has an obligation to ensure the safety of its citizens, animals, plants and the environment.
- The primary purpose of using pesticides is to control pests in crops and animals in order to reduce yield losses.

No person can sell, import, distribute, manufacture or commercially use an agrochemical/ any pest control product unless that pest control product has been Registered,packaged and labeled in accordance with the Botswana Agrochemicla Act.
