ProcedureEdit

  1. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will from time to time announce a general registration period whereby eligible citizens can verify that they are included on the voter’s rolls and if they are not included, they can register to be added to the roll.IEC Contact and Map Location Details
  2. The voter registration process is applicable only to Botswana citizens who are either:
    • Residents
    • Non-Residents
  3. The IEC will identify the registration stations/centers in each district during the general registration period.
  4. The names of established registration stations/centers are published in the Gazette and such other manner as the IEC may consider appropriate.


Apply In-Person
For Residents:

  1. During general registration periods announced by the Independent Electoral Commission, interested applicant should head to the polling station in their specified constituency to check the voters’ roll.
  2. During times other than the general registration period, the applicant should head to the Office of the Principal Registration Officer in their constituency to check the voter’s roll.
  3. In either case, if the applicant is not on the existing voters’ roll, head to a Registration Officer at that location with your valid National Identity Card (Omang) who will interview you and complete a registration form.
  4. If the Registration Officer is satisfied that applicant is eligible to vote, then the applicant will be registered and included in the voter’s roll for that constituency and issued with a Voter’s Registration Card within few minutes.
  5. If the Registration Officer is not satisfied that the applicant is entitled to vote, then the applicant will be issued a Notice of Rejection (Form C).
  6. No fee is associate with this service.


For Non-Residents:

  1. All voters’ registration process will be conducted at the same time as general registration period within Botswana.
  2. During general registration periods non-residents can go to the Botswana Embassy, consular mission or other location specified in the newspaper announcement to check the voters’ roll.  Consulate generals serve as polling stations and conduct registration of non-residents Batswana.
  3. Interested applicants who are not on the existing voters’ roll, head to the designated individual with their valid National Identity Card (Omang). Applicants will be interviewed and complete a registration form.
  4. If the Registration Officer is satisfied that you are entitled to vote. The applicant will be issued a Voter Registration Card (Form B) within few minutes.
  5. If the Registration Officer is not satisfied that the applicant is entitled to vote, the applicant will be issued a Notice of Rejection (Form C).
  6. No fee is associate with this service.

The Voter registration card is valid forever until, where a voter wishes to transfer the voter’s registration to an electoral area other than the one the voter is registered in.

All Botswana citizens aged 18 and over who wish to vote in National and Local Government elections must register themselves with the Independent Electoral Commission and obtain a voter registration card.
