ProcedureEdit

How to apply:

  1. You should contact the office of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Science and Technology department of Radiation Protection Inspectorate (RPI) for more information on how to file the application with the department.
  2. Application forms can be obtained from the above office or download them by clicking the links below
    • Application for License to Import, Export, Transport, Possess or Use Radioactive Sources (Form 2).
    • Ionizing Safety User Registration Form (Form RAIS 01)
    • Radiation Ionizing Safety (Form RAIS 02)
  3. Accurately fill in the application forms and submit the completed forms along with the required supporting documentation (as listed below)
  4. Inspectorate staff will verify and process your application and provide feedback to the you within two weeks.
  5. If your application has passed the assessment stage it will be published in the Government Gazette and submitted for the next scheduled meeting of the Radiation Protection Board for final evaluation.Please note That your application must have passed the assessment stage at least three weeks before the Board meeting date in order to be submitted for that meeting
  6. After your application has been published in the Gazette for a minimum of seven days, it will then be submitted to the next scheduled Radiation Protection Board meeting for final evaluation.
  7. You will then bewill be informed of the decision of the board within three days of the board meeting.
  8. If the board is satisfied that you have complied with all the requirements as set for the application of the licence and there is no public objection, you will be issued the licence and may collect it from the office of the RPI after payment of the applicable license fee.

Required DocumentsEdit

  • A Radiation Safety and Protection programme/plan;
  • A safety assessment (in cases where this is prescribed by the Inspectorate);
  • Curriculum vitae and certified copies of academic certificates of the nominated radiation safety Officer and his/her Deputy;
  • Certificate of Incorporation (Form 4); and
  • Practice authorizations from Botswana Health Profession Council for all operators (Medical practice only).

EligibilityEdit

Those who engage in or intend to engage in any of the following activities require a license:

  • Acquire, own, possess, transfer, distribute, sell, use, manufacture, transport, import, or export any radioactive material, radioactive substance, or source;
  • Administer any radioactive substance to any person for the purposes of diagnosis, treatment or research;
  • Add radioactive substances in the production and manufacture of foodstuffs, medicinal products, cosmetics and products for household use;
  • Physically or chemically alter or modify part or all of any radioactive material, substance or source; or
  • Manage or dispose of any radioactive waste.

FeesEdit

(This schedule is reviewed annually)
  • The notification fee is BWP50.00 for the Gazette notification.

Note:
License/authorization fees, payable in cash, cheque, or adjustment voucher vary according to the risk associated with the radiation sources and are reviewed annually

ValidityEdit

  • The licence is valid for one year unless revoked or suspended by the Radiation Protection Inspectorate department

The Radiation Protection Board will also consider any written notice of objection or other representations made by members of the public.

Required InformationEdit

  • Particular of the applicant
  • Location of the Premises where the Radioactive Equipment/Sources/Generators will be used, stored, manufactured, etc
  • Nature of business
  • Purpose(s) for which the radiation generator(s)/radioactive source(s) are to be used
  • Name and Registration number of the Radiation Safety Officer
  • Particulars of the radioactive sources used, stored, manufactured or otherwise dealt with on the premises. (SUPPLEMENTARY form attached.
  • Particulars of the manufacture/supplier
  • Particular of the vehicle to be used

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • In relation to the Radiation Protection Act, 2006 and Radiation Protection Regulation 2008, state that any person who wishes to engage in activities which involve ionizing radiation sources must obtain a license to do so.
  • This is to ensure safe use of atomic energy and nuclear technology, to ensure that the operators/users, public and the environment are protected from the adverse effects of ionizing radiation
