Apply In Person

  1. The application to Convert Foreign Flight Engineers License shall be made to the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) office. CAAB Contact Details.
  2. The application shall be made in writing in such a manner as prescribed by the CAAB office and shall be accompanied by all the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page and submitted to the CAAB head office, Personal Licensing unit for consideration, only if the applicant is a holder of a valid medical certificate or after ascertaining that your medical assessment has been assessed as “fit” by the Civil Aviation Medical Board (CAMB). This will be certified in the Aviation Medical Assessment application form. Any omission of the required information or documents will render the application process incomplete.
  3. Upon receipt of the application, the Personal Licensing officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
  4. If the Personal Licensing officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application for the license, the application is registered for processing and consideration.
  5. Applicants will be required to pay prescribed fees as mentioned on the CAAB fee schedule, refer to the “Fees” section of this page, which is payable either in cash at the CAAB cashier counter/accounts office or by cheque in favour of the CAAB.
  6. The applicant is issued with a payment slip and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
  7. Applicants will then be required to take a Botswana Air law Examinations (Knowledge test) with an appropriately approved Botswana Delegated Examiner.
  8. Please note, that it is compulsory to be in possession of a valid identity document or passport to enter and attempt these examinations.
  9. An applicant who fails a knowledge test shall be disqualified for further testing until the applicant proves that he or she has gained a practical experience of one month.
  10. Having successfully passed the Botswana Air law Examinations, the CAAB personal licensing unit will then establish the authenticity and validity of the Flight Engineers license, by contacting the authority that issued the license.
  11. If satisfied with the outcome, the application is approved and you will be notified when the license is ready for collection by phone or mail.
  12. Proceed to the CAAB registration and license office and present the acknowledgment letter and identity document and proof of payment of the license fee to be validated by the Flight Safety licensing office.
  13. The applicant will be made to, sign on the signature pad/book and will be issued with the printed converted license at the CAAB Personal License Office.

  • Foreign Flight Engineers License to be converted.
  • A photocopy of the applicant’s foreign license and medical certification
  • A knowledge test report and/or skill test report conducted by a CAAB Designated Engineer Examiner
  • Two (2) color passport size recent photographs (full face)
  • Valid identity document (passport/Identity card)
  • Proof of at least four years work experience (or the flight Engineers Experience Log-Book)
  • Certified copies of training certificates
  • Payment receipt of the prescribed fees
  • An English translation of the foreign license if it is in the foreign language translation; certified by a sworn translator and both must be signed by an official or representative of the foreign authority that issued the license.
  • Any other additional documents requested for be the CAAB

EligibilityEdit

  • A person who holds a current Foreign Flight Engineers License issued by another Contracting State may apply and be issued an equivalent license with the appropriate ratings
  • Has a license that is not under an order of revocation or suspension by the country that issued the license;
  • Holds a license that meets all the ICAO standards for that license.
  • Be at least eighteen years of age.
  • Must hold a current and valid foreign Flight Engineer License (including a radio license).
  • Hold a valid, relevant medical certificate from a Botswana designated medical examiner.
  • Any class or type ratings you intend to fly with this conversion must also be current and valid.
  • Proof of the English language proficiency.
  • Results of a passed composite conversion exam for the license being applied for.
  • The required flying experience as substantiated by the flying logbook.
  • The applicable aeronautical experience requirements for each license being sought.
  • An aircraft type rating for either pilot-in- command or co-pilot respectively included in the Flight Engineer license.
  • The applicant shall pass a knowledge test.

ValidityEdit

  • The validity of the converted Foreign Flight Engineer license will be indicated on the license, the license shall remain valid for that period unless suspended, revoked, or cancelled by the authority.
  • Applicants need to apply for license renewal to CAAB at least Sixty (60) days before expiry.

  • Conversion of a pilot’s Foreign Flight Engineer License (FFEL) allows a flight engineer who has a foreign license to be able to fly/ operate in Botswana on a long-term basis.
  • Flight engineers assist aircraft pilots and engineering maintenance staff by operating aircraft instruments and systems.
