Apply In-Person

  1. The application to Convert Foreign Aircraft Maintenance Engineers License (AMEL) shall be made to the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) office. CAAB Contact Details

Applicants will be required to collect and complete thefollowing forms, Application for Airman License and Application for an Aviation Medical Assessment form; also the applicant will be required to book an appointment for Botswana Air law Examinations by completing the AMEL Entry Form for Written Examination. Forms are obtainable at the CAAB office, Flight Safety unit or download them via the CAAB website, CAAB Airworthiness Application Forms or directly download them using these links, Application for Airman License Form, AMEL Entry Form for Written Examination,Application for an Aviation Medical Assessment
  3. The duly completed forms, attached to the supporting documents as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section, should be submitted to the CAAB head office,Flight Safety unit. Any omission of the required information or documents will render the application process incomplete.
  4. Upon receipt of the application, the Flight Safety officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
  5. If the Flight Safety officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application for the license, the application is registered for processing and consideration.
  6. Applicants will be required to pay prescribed fees as mentioned on the CAAB fee schedule, refer to the “Fees” section of this page,which is payableeither in cash at the CAAB cashier counter/accounts office or by cheque in favour of the CAAB.
  7. The applicant is issued with a payment slip and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
  8. Applicants will then be required to take a Botswana Air law Examinations (Knowledge test) with an appropriately approved Botswana AME Delegated Examiner.
    Please note, that it is compulsory to be in possession of a valid identity document or passport to enter and attempt these examinations.
  9. An applicant who fails a knowledge test shall be disqualified for further testing until the applicant proves that he or she has gained a practical experience of one month.
  10. Having successfully passed the Botswana Air law Examinations, the CAAB Flight Safety unit will then establish the authenticity and validity of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers license, by contacting the authority that issued the license.
  11. If satisfied with the outcome, the application is approved and you will be notified when the license is ready for collection by phone or mail.
  12. Proceed to the CAAB registration and license office and present the acknowledgment letter and identity document and proof of payment of the license fee to be validated by the Flight Safety licensing office.
  13. The applicant will be made to, sign on the signature pad/book and will be issued with the printed converted license at the CAABFlight SafetyOffice.

EligibilityEdit

  • A person who holds a current Aircraft Maintenance Engineer License (AMEL) issued by another Contracting State may apply and be issued an equivalent license with the appropriate ratings
  • Has a license that is not under an order of revocation or suspension by the country that issued the license;
  • Holds a license that meets all the ICAO standards for that license.
  • Be at least eighteen years of age.
  • Have at least Four years’ aircraft maintenance experience.
  • The applicant shall pass a knowledge test in:-(Air law; air law, meteorology,operational procedures, and radiotelephony)
  • Complete a skills test relevant to the licence and ratings to be validated in accordance with the privileges of the licence

ValidityEdit

  • The validity of the converted Aircraft Maintenance Engineer license will be indicated on the license, the license shall remain valid for that period unless suspended, revoked, or cancelled by the authority.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • An aircraft maintenance engineer who has a foreign aircraft maintenance engineer license (AMEL) and wishes to do aircraft maintenance work in Botswana is required to convert their foreign AMEL for a Botswana AMEL.
  • A holder of an aircraft maintenance engineer license (AMEL) may perform or supervise the maintenance, preventive maintenance, or modification of, or after inspection, approve for return to service, any aircraft, airframe, aircraft engine, propeller, appliance, component, or part thereof.

  • The applicant should demonstrate the minimum level of Aircraft knowledge i.e. Diploma or Degree in Aeronautical engineering, Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, and an AMEL training course from an approved ATO, or degree in Mechanical Engineering and an AMEL training course from an approved ATO.
  • An applicant for an AMEL under this regulation shall submit the license in the English language or accompanied by an English language translation that has been signed by an official or representative of the foreign authority that issued the license.
  • An applicant for conversion who fails the knowledge test shall be disqualified for further testing until after a proven practical experience of one month is gained.
  • The applicant shall be required to have passed the air law and composite paper for conversion of a foreign license within a period of six months.
