- To Apply for a Fishing License, a person that wishes to continue engaging in fishing activities shall apply for a new permit and the application shall be made to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks office (DWNP), which is under the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism office. Open fishing season is between March 1st and December 31st, annually. Ministry Office Location & Contact Details
- Any person who wishes to engage in, Commercial fishing or recreation fishing has to make the application in writing to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks office in such form and manner as may be prescribed by the department. - The appropriate duly complete application form attached to the relevant supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page, should be submitted to the nearest Wildlife & National Park offices.
- The application for a recreation fishing license should be submitted at least two months before the date of such competition/activity.
- Please note: Those who wish to fish at the camps/lodges should bring a letter from the camp and for the dams they need the entrance permit from Water Utilities Corporation.
- Upon submission, the application is checked for completeness and correctness by the receiving officer, if everything is in order the applicant will be required to pay the license fee as mentioned in the “Fees” section of this page.
- The application will only be registered to be processed when payment has been made, the applicant will be issued with an acknowledgment slip that proves submission of the application file and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
- Upon processing, the license/permit will be signed by the Director/authorized official, and the DWNP stamp will be affixed on the license and made available, for the issue to the applicant within the course of the day in the case of Recreation Fishing License and within 5 working days for Commercial Fishing License.
Appeal to the Minister:
- Any person who is aggrieved by the refusal of the Director to grant a permit or by any terms imposed by the Director to grant a permit may appeal against the refusal or the terms and conditions to the Minister.

- Copy of previously held fishing permit
For Recreation Fishing License Requirements:

- Citizens: Certified copy of valid National Identity Card (Omang)
- Non-Citizens: Certified copy of Passport

- Recreation Fishing License - Citizens and Non-Citizens who are 18 years of age and above.
- Commercial Fishing License - Citizens eighteen (18) years of age and above.

- Commercial Fishing License - BWP 200.00 for 3 consecutive seasons.
- Recreation Fishing License:
- Citizens BWP30.00 (Monthly) ,BWP360.00 (Annually).
- Non-Citizens BWP300.00 (Monthly), BWP600.00 (Annually).
ValidityEdit
- The Recreation Fishing license is valid for either one month or one year, while the Commercial Fishing License is valid for 3 consecutive seasons unless suspended, canceled, or revoked by the authority.

Need for the DocumentEdit
- A person is required to obtain a valid fishing license prior to fishing in inland waters or transporting fish taken from inland waters. A person is required to keep his/her fishing license with him/her at all times while fishing or transporting fish and must exhibit their license for inspection by any warden, department employee, guide, or landowner upon request.
- A recreation fishing license is granted to those who wish to fish for recreational/sports purposes.
- A Commercial Fishing License is granted to those who wish to fish for profit and permission to use gillnet. This license applies to those engaged in commercial fishing including those who own Fish Farms.
