Botswana - Apply for Drivers Instructor Certificate

- Visit any of the Driver Trainers at the DRTS Driving Academy at office 204, second floor, Botswana Building Society Building, BBS Mall, Broad Hurst, Gaborone, and verbally request for assistance on how to enrol for a driving instructors' training course.
- The Driver Trainer registers will then register you into the Candidate Register and you will be notified prior to the beginning of the course.
- After being conducted, accurately fill in the application forms, which are available at the Enquiries Desk at any Offices of the Department of Road Transport & Safety near you or click the link below to download: DL 1 - Botswana Driving Licence Application form, DL 31 - Health Declaration form
- Take completed form along with supporting documents (listed below) to eye screening office and undergo eye screening.
- Upon passing the eye sight assessment test by the licensing officer, he/she will then fill in Eye screening form (DL8) according to his/her findings.
- If you fail to pass the eye sight assessment then the Registration and Licensing Officer would than refer you to be seen by an external eye specialist for further testing and then bring back the doctor’s medical report and recommendation back to the licensing office.
- If the Registration and Licensing Officer is satisfied with the report obtained from the eye sight assessment and all documents are in order he/she will approve your request and you can then begin your training class.
- Pay the training courses fees, upon which you will be issued a receipt.
- You should then attend the training courses, according to the provided schedule, after which you will have to go through Theory and Practical test.
- Upon completion of the course, you should Visit the Licensing and Registration Office at the DRTS Offices in Fairgrounds, Goldvalley in Francistown and Maru-a-pula (Gaborone VTS), and pay the theory fees, and book theory test first.
- Undergo theory test at given date.
- Once successful, re-visit the Licensing & Registration Office to pay for and book practical (driving test) Please note that practical tests may be booked, paid for and undertaken only at the offices in Francistown (VTS), Gantsi, Lobatse, Mahalapye, Maru-a-pula (VTS) in Gaborone, Mochudi, Molepolole, Palapye only.
- Undergo practical test at given date.
- After passing all the tests, present all test results and documentation to the nearest Registration and Licensing office for payment for the First Issuance of driving instructor's certificate, upon which you will be issued with a receipt.
- Then Present all documentation along with two passport - sized photographs to DRTS Driver Academy at office 204, second floor, Botswana Building Society Building, BBS Mall, Broadhurst, Gaborone to be issued with a Driving Instructor's certificate.
Note: If you are unable to pay for the first issuance immediately after the course, you can submit the document to the nearest DRTS office who will, in-turn, forward them to DRTS Academy in Gaborone when you are able to pay.

- Valid omang (Citizens).
- Valid passport (Expatriates).
- Certified copies of exemption certificate / Residence permit, certified by the Department of Immigration (Expatriates).
- Certified copy of work permit, certified by the Department of Labor (Expatriates).
- Police-certified copy of a minimum Junior Secondary Certificate in Education (JSCE) or equivalent education certificate (first time applicants only).
- Receipts as proof of payments

EligibilityEdit
All citizens and residents, who meet the below criteria may apply for a Driving Instructor Certificate:
- At least 21 years of age.
- The holder of a valid Botswana driving licence, for the desired class, for a minimum of 2 years.
- The holder of a valid class B instructor's certificate (applicants for group 2 motor vehicles (C1, C, EC1, EC, and PrDP). C1, C, EC1, & EC are heavy motor vehicles with a gross vehicle mass of more than 3500 kg.
- The holder of a minimum of a Junior Secondary Certificate in Education (JSCE) or equivalent.

ValidityEdit
The certificate is valid for one year and should be renewed within 3 months to expiring date.
