How to apply for a National Police Check. For applicants who live in Australia.
- 1. Find a ACIC accredited National Police Check provider using a browser on your computer / mobile device.
- 2. For individual applicants, click “Start a new Police Check” and you will be redirected to this page.
- 3. Complete all required fields and make sure the information you provided aligns with your ID documents.
- 4. The system requires scanning or uploading documents (you can use a scanner / printer with scanning feature / mobile phone with cameras to get those) and your selfie photo.
- 5. Finish the application following the system guidance. Your application will not be processed until you hit the “Submit” button.
- 6. Application status is then confirmed by email within a few minutes. Most National Criminal History Check processed through Australian National Character Check are dispatched within one to three business days.
Required DocumentsEdit
The identity documents provided must be issued under the legal name of the applicant. Change of name Evidence from the Registry of Births, deaths and marriages will be required if the ID document is under a previous name.
Applicants of Police Clearance Certificates should prepare at least one document from each following classes.
Commencement of ID
- Australian Birth Certificate / Australian Passport / Australian Citizenship Certificate.
- Australian Visa / ImmiCard / Certificate identity issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

ValidityEdit
Results on National Criminal History Checks have no set expiry date. They are a “point in time check”. Generally it is up to employers to decide how old a Police Check can be. Most employers do not accept Police Clearance Certificates that are older than three months.

Applicant’s should approach their local government shopfront to get identification documents updated should they find they do not meet minimum identification document requirements. This means that you may need to obtain new documents, or have your existing documents changed to reflect your name correctly if they currently do not.
