Wales - Replace a Driving Licence

Procedure[edit]

Online

Apply using your Government Gateway ID. If you dont have one or need to re-register, youll get an ID as part of your application.

  1. Click the link to apply online : LINK
  2. Pay the fee of 20 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card

Notes:

  • You will need to contact the police if your driving licence is stolen.
  • Beginning 8 June 2015, you will no longer need the paper counterpart of your licence.


If youve got a photocard driving licence

Apply by phone:

Apply by post:

  • Car or motorbike licence holders: Fill in form D1 Application for a driving licence. The form is available from the DVLA form ordering service or most Post Offices.
  • Lorry or bus licence: Fill in form D2 Application for a lorry/bus licence. The form is available from the DVLA form ordering service.

Send the completed application to the address on the form along with the correct fee (also shown on the form), include the part of your licence you still have if only one part is missing.

If your name has changed youll also need to send original documents confirming this.


If youve got a paper driving licence

Apply by post:

  • Car or motorbike licence holders: Fill in form D1 Application for a driving licence. The form is available from the DVLA form ordering service or most Post Offices.
  • Lorry or bus licence: Fill in form D2 Application for a lorry/bus licence. The form is available from the DVLA form ordering service.

Along with your completed application enclose original documents confirming your identity, a passport-type photo and your paper licence if its been damaged.

Send your application to the address on the form along with the correct fee (also shown on the form)

Required Documents[edit]

Online:

  • valid UK passport or other form of identity
  • Your photo: DVLA will use an electronic copy of your passport photo for your photocard driving licence if:
    • your photocard licence is due to expire within 2 years
    • you have a UK passport
DVLA will inform you if a suitable electronic photo isnt available. Youll then need to print a form and send it to them with a new photograph. You can make sure the photo on your licence is updated by using the photo driving licence renewal service. You need a valid UK passport to do this online.


If youve got a photocard driving licence - By post:

Eligibility[edit]

You may request a replacement licence online, by phone or by post.

Application Online:

  • be a resident of Great Britain (theres a different service in Northern Ireland)
  • not be disqualified from driving for any reason
  • have a valid UK passport or other form of identity


By phone:

  • You may apply by phone if youve got a photocard driving licence and if none of your details have changed.
  • You cannot use this service if your licence is damaged, or if it expires in less than 56 days (90 days if its expiring for medical reasons).


By post:

  • You can apply by post if youve got a paper driving licence.
  • You may also send your application by post if youve got a photocard driving licence

Processing Time[edit]

  • Online: Your replacement photocard and paper counterpart should arrive within a week if you apply online.
  • Postal Applications: It will take DVLA about 3 weeks to process your application.

You may get a replacement driving licence in case your current one was lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. Following are procedures on how to apply for one.
