Wales - Renew Driving Licence

Procedure[edit]

Renew Online

Apply using your Government Gateway ID. If you dont have one or need to re-register, youll get an ID as part of your application.

  1. Click the link to apply online : LINK
  2. Pay 14 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card (theres no fee if youre over 70 or have a medical short period licence)
  3. It will take about a week for DVLA to process your application and send your new driving licence.
  4. You must send the photocard and paper counterpart of your old licence to DVLA when you get your new licence. Youll be told the address to use when you finish the application.

Your new licence will be valid from the date your application is approved, not from the expiry date of your current licence.


The Post Office

Send a renewal form (D798) by post. The form has a list of the closest Post Offices where you can renew your driving licence.

You can also find your nearest suitable Post Office on the Post Office website or you can call them: 0345 722 3344

You cant download a copy of form D798, but if you dont get your renewal reminder you may still be able to renew your licence at selected Post Offices. Youll need to have the photocard and paper counterpart of your current licence.


Renew by Post

  1. Fill in the renewal form D798.
  2. Include the following to your application:
    a new passport type photo taken within the last month (dont sign the back of the photo)
    the photocard and paper counterpart of your current licence (you need to tick the relevant box on the D798 form if youve lost either part)
    a cheque or postal order for 17, payable to DVLA (no fee is needed if you have a medical short period licence or youre aged 70 or over)
    You also need to include identity documents if youve changed your name.
  3. Send the application to:

The Post Office:

  • the completed renewal form D798
  • your photocard licence and paper counterpart if you have them


Renewal by Mail:

  • Completed renewal form
  • a new passport type photo taken within the last month (dont sign the back of the photo)
  • the photocard and paper counterpart of your current licence (you need to tick the relevant box on the D798 form if youve lost either part)

Note: If you dont have the D798 reminder and want to apply by post, fill in form D1 Application for a driving licence, available from the DVLA form ordering service and selected Post Offices.

Your driving licence should arrive within 3 weeks. It might take longer if your medical or personal details need to be checked.

Eligibility[edit]

To renew online, you need:

  • a valid UK passport
  • to be a resident of Great Britain
  • to not be disqualified from driving
  • Note: You cant apply online if your name or title has changed or if you have a 5-year bus or lorry licence.


The Post Office:

  • You cannot apply at the Post Office if your name has changed. Youll need to apply by post.



Fees[edit]

Renewal of licence:

  • Online: 14 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card (theres no fee if youre over 70 or have a medical short period licence)
  • Post Office: 17
The Post Office will charge an extra 4.50 fee to process your application.
  • By mail:a cheque or postal order for 17, payable to DVLA (no fee is needed if you have a medical short period licence or youre aged 70 or over)

You must renew a photocard licence every 10 years.

Processing Time[edit]

Need for the Document[edit]

A driving license is an official document which states that a person may operate a motorized vehicle, such as a motorcycle, car, truck or a bus, on a public roadway. This document also serves as identification and proof of age.

You must renew a photocard licence every 10 years - DVLA will be sending licence holders a notification before the current licence expires.

Theres a different service if you want to renew your licence and youre 70 or over.
