- Go to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
- Register the death by completing the form which will be given to you at the Registrar. State all the facts related to the death.
- When the registration is complete, the registrar will give you the following, free of charge:
- A certificate of registration of death for production to the person in charge of the burial ground or crematorium
- A Social Security registration or notification of death certificate for use in obtaining or adjusting Social Security benefits
- An abbreviated extract (i.e. excluding cause of death and parentage details) of the death entry
- A full extract of the death entry
- If a death occurs abroad, you should register the death according to local regulations in the country concerned and obtain a certificate of death. You can also register the death with the British Consul in that country for a fee, but is not an obligation to do so. A record of the death will be sent to Scotland and you will thereafter be able to get a copy from New Register House.
- the medical certificate of cause of death
- the deceased's birth and marriage certificate
- the deceased's NHS medical card
- any documents relating to the receipt of a pension or allowance from government funds

The death can be registered by the following:
- any relative of the deceased
- any person present when the person died
- the deceased's executor or other legal representative
- the occupier of the property where the person died
- anyone else who knows the information to be registered

- The death of a person must be registered within eight days of the date of the death by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
- Any death can be registered at any registration district in Scotland.
- The address of the local registrar from the undertaker, the hospital, the doctor, the telephone book and the Directory of Registrars in Scotland: http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/registration/reglist.pdf.
- There are different opening hours of registration offices for local authorities and some operate an appointments system. You should therefore check with the relevant local authority before attending an office.
- It is important to know that a burial can take place before the registration but a cremation can only take place after the death has been registered.
- If you don't have all the documents available for death registration, the registrar can still proceed to register the death.
- full name of the deceased person
- postal address
- date of birth
- country of birth
- full name of husband or wife (if married, widowed or divorced)
- occupation of the husband or wife
- full name and occupation of the father of the deceased person
- maiden's full name of the deceased person
- name and address of the person's NHS doctor

Death registration is the process of stating the particulars related to the dead person, including the name of the individual, the date of birth and the date of death.
