Procedure[edit]

You hold a valid Northern Ireland driver’s license. It will expire every 10 years, unless you have a driving license that has been medically restricted or you are over 60 years old.

About two months before your license expires the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) will send you a renewal notice called “Application for Renewal of a Driving License” (DL1R) by mail.

Once you have received your renewal notice, you can apply to renew your driving license by online or by mail.

If, for any reason, you do not receive the renewal notice (DL1R) from the DVA, you can apply online or use the DL1 driving license application form from any suitable Post Offices or MOT test centres.

To renew your driver’s license, please follow the below guiding:

By Mail
  • Prepare the required documents:
    • The completed DL1R form that you received from the DVA, or the completed DL1 form from any Post Offices or MOT test centres
    • Proof of your name change as your passport, birth and marriage/civil partnership certificate or deed poll (if applicable)
    • Your new passport type colour photograph (see more details)
    • The renewal payment of £30
  • Mail it all to the DVA driver licensing
