Procedure[edit]

1.Start by locating a court nearest to you. The court can either be in your area of residence or place of work. Applicants abroad look for a nearby Nigerian diplomatic mission (either Nigerian embassy, consulate office or high commission);

2.Go to the identified court / diplomatic mission and apply to make a sworn statement / affidavit for change of name;

3.When the statement is made, you insert your signature and person in whose present the affidavit is sworn (judge / attorney / diplomatic mission authority) authenticates the affidavit, then you can start using the new name;

Instructions[edit]

1.A name change advert must be placed in a newspaper in Nigeria;

2.Applications for child of name of children can be submitted which the help of adults with parental responsibility;

3.Applicants above sixteen (16) years must agree to change of name;

4.For married applicants, their spouses must agree to change of name;

Need for the Document[edit]

Change a personal name refers to the process of giving up an originally used name to a new (adopted) name. In Nigeria, change of names is done in the high court on the other hand; Nigerians abroad can apply to change their names at a nearby diplomatic mission in the country a foreign country.



Information which might help[edit]

After changing name, you can proceed with changing name on documents where possible and where it is not possible, documents on which a name cannot be change may be used with support of the affidavit;



Other uses of the Document/Certificate[edit]

1.Change of name gives new identity to a person;

2.If a person does not like his / her original name, with change of name he / she chooses a name he / she likes;

3.In cases of cases of marriage a woman if she wants to can change her name by adding her husbands

4.In cases of divorce, if a woman no longer wishes to use his ex-husbands name, it can be changes;

5.Through change of name, a child may change his / her parent(s) name;
