Nigeria - Apply for NYSC Exemption Letter

Procedure[edit]

For Home trained graduates:

  • The process begins with the tertiary institution you are attending. you are eligible to apply for the exemption document in case you meet the following requirements:
  1. You are older than thirty
  2. You have already served in the police or armed force
  3. You are a current member of a security service, intelligence or other state services
  4. You have some national honour awards

Approach the administration of the school to make the application for exemption.

  • Upon graduation, the school submits the master list of their graduates alongside with the Senate approved result to NYSC.
  • A print-out is processed by NYSC classifying those to be called up for service and those to be exempted. This print-out is sent back to the Institutions for verifications and corrections after which they are returned to NYSC as an agreed/corrected document.
  • At this point can visit the official site of NYSC www.portal.nysc.org.ng to print the exemption letter.
  1. Create an account in the NYSC portal
  2. log in using your credentials and a password.
  3. There you will find an option to print the letter.
  • With the print-out, the Certificates of Exemption are produced, documented and sent back to the Institutions for issuance to the appropriate persons.
  • If you have been studying in Nigeria and graduated from a Nigerian university, you can expect the exemption certificate without any additional procedures.

Collection of Certificate of Exemption for home trained graduates is only done in the Institution of graduation and not in NYSC office.
For foreign-trained graduates

  • One needs to approach NYSC directorate headquarters Abuja, to make the application for exemption.

  1. Fill the application for exemption form provided at the NYSC offices
  2. Present either of following documents for evaluation at the NYSC office is that qualifies you for exemption
    • Academic certificate
    • International passport
    • Proof of identification
    • Proof of service in the Nigerian Police or any arm of the Armed Forces
    • Proof of employment in any of the following institution
    • Proof of conferment of National Honor
  3. The Defence Intelligence Service
  4. The National Intelligence Agency
  5. The Nigerian Security Organization
  6. The State Security Service

  • After the evaluation of credentials, the foreign trained graduate is then registered and this is physically done at the NYSC directorate headquarters, Abuja. It is at the point of registration that the classification of who to be called-up or who to be exempted; is determined.
  • Certificates of Exemption are therefore produced for those exempted from service.
  • Such Certificates of Exemption for foreign graduates are to be collected at the NYSC directorate headquarters at the stipulated time communicated.
  • Collection of Certificate of Exemption is strictly with identification such as International passport and the bearer must be physically present.
  • The process of collection of the certificates is split into three batches during the current service year. The batch you are in is determined by the date of your registration. This information will also be provided for the graduates during the registration stage
  • No fees are charged for the application

For Nigerian trained graduates

  • Proof of age
  • Proof of service in the Nigerian Police or any arm of the Armed Forces
  • Proof of employment in any of the following institution
  1. The Defence Intelligence Service
  2. The National Intelligence Agency
  3. The Nigerian Security Organization
  4. The State Security Service
  • Proof of conferment of National Honor

For foreign students

  1. First Degree Certificate BA, B.SC, HND.
  2. Complete transcript of the degree or HND
  3. Marks Sheets ( for Indian schools only)
  4. ' O'Levels i.e WASC, WAEC, GCE, SSCE, NECO,IGCE, High school Diploma or High School Diploma
  5. Registration certificate with Medical Dental Council of Nigeria ( for doctors only)
  6. Registration certificate with Pharmacist Council of Nigeria ( for Pharmacists only)
  7. Nigeria International passport Showing the following:
    • First Departure date from Nigeria
    • Student Visa
    • Last arrival date into Nigeria
  8. Three (3) Passport size photographs.

Eligibility[edit]

  • Nigerian graduates either home or oversea trained who have the stipulated qualification of (B.Sc, B.A, HND) from approved or accredited institution by (NUC, NTBE, NCCE) are eligible for exemption certificate. However, foreign trained graduates must submit their certificates at the mobilization Department for Evaluation.
  • Nigerian graduates, older than thirty years by the time he/she graduates from the university or polytechnic can apply for an exemption certificate.
  • Nigerian graduate who has served in the Nigerian Police or any arm of the Armed Forces of Nigeria for at least nine months can apply for a certificate of exemption.
  • Nigerian graduate who is a staff member of any of four organization or agencies listed below can apply for a certificate of exemption:
  1. The Defence Intelligence Service
  2. The National Intelligence Agency
  3. The Nigerian Security Organization
  4. The State Security Service
  • Nigerian graduate who has been conferred with a National Honour can apply for an exemption certificate.

The exemption letter is valid forever.

Instructions of obtaining an NYSC exemption certificate for Nigerian graduates

  1. The collection process for NYSC exemption certificate consists of the following steps:
    • Your University/Polytechnic/College of Education has to submit the master lists of their graduate showing you graduated from the school along with their results approved by the Senate to the National Youth Service Corps.
    • The National Youth Service Corps will classify those that are to be called up for service and those that are to be exempted. A print-out containing both groups will be sent back to your institution to verify and make necessary corrections before sending it back to NYSC.
    • After the print-out have been sent back to the NYSC office, the Certificate of Exemption will be processed, documented and sent to your institution.
    • Your institution then gives the certificates out to the appropriate persons. You can pick yours up at your convenient time at the appropriate office in your University/Polytechnic/College of Education.
    • Note – Nigerian graduates can collect their NYSC Exemption Certificate only at the institution from where they graduated and not at the National Youth Service Corps office.
  2. Instructions to obtain a NYSC Certificate of Exemption for foreign graduates
  • The collection process begins with the submission of your credential and related documents to the NYSC office.
  • Followed by the evaluation of your credentials and documents.
  • After the evaluation, you will complete a registration which is done physically at the National Youth Service Corps directorate headquarters in Abuja. The classification of those that will be called-up for service and those that will be exempted is done at this point of registration.
  • The Exemption Certificate will be processed for those who have been classified to be exempted.
  • The Certificates of Exemption for foreign graduates is to be picked up at the National Youth Service Corps directorate headquarters at the time stipulated.
  • The collection of NYSC exemption certificate can only be done with identification such as International Passport. And you can only take it in person.

Need for the Document[edit]

  • The certificate excuses the holder from the NYSC year.
  • This certificate can be presented in place of NYSC Certificate of National Service when required.

Information which might help[edit]

  • The process of collection of the certificates is split into three batches during the current service year. The batch you are in is determined by the date of your registration. This information will also be provided for the graduates during the registration stage
  • The exemption letter is valid practically forever until you are not able to serve in the NYSC due to the age or so.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate[edit]

  • The certificate is often asked as a requirement when applying for government jobs in Nigeria.
  • The certificate is a proof of your patriotic and civic duty.

Others[edit]

  • If you lose the exemption certificate, you will need a new one. With this, you need to turn to the Head Office with and request a replacement. The documents involve a letter addressed to the NYSC Director General, your identification documents, possibly a copy of the lost certificate, if you have one.
  • However, lost or burnt certificates are not reprinted. Instead, you will receive a confirmation letter that will work as the certificate upon request.
