1. Get a Log Book for the motor vehicle in your name; this is a book that shows all the particulars of a motor vehicle like the motor registration number, the engine and chassis numbers;

2. Make payment for insurance;

3. Get a license for the vehicle:

4. Go to the official license plate office and get the motor vehicle license plates made;

Eligibility

Applicants must be owners of vehicles with valid registration numbers in order to apply for a personal number plate.

Fees

• A fees of 150 Libyan Dinars is paid for the number plate
• Foreigners / visitors may be required to pay an additional fees refundable deposit of 1000 LYD, which is refunded when a foreigners / visitors leaves the country.

It has no validity period

Instructions

• Fill application form accurately;
• Applicant should make sure he / she has, the current owner names in the log book;
• Have all the required documents read;
• Make all the necessary payments;
• A separate application must be submitted for each personalized registration plate.
• New vehicles must be titled and registered prior to a personalized plate being issued.

Required Information

1. Vehicle registration number;
2. The vehicle engine number for the motor vehicle;
3. Chassis number; and
4. The current owner full names (as in the log book);

Need for the Document

Obtaining a Motor vehicle personal number plate means buying the right to assign the number (an individual prefers) to a vehicle and display it on its number plates.

The vehicle plate can be registered in the applicants name, or in the name of someone else (the nominee) as requested by the applicant.

The current series of private number plates in Libya is on a blue plate with black lettering. The lettering is in Arabic.

Information which might help

• Foreigners / visitors should not forget to claim for their additional refundable fees deposited as they leave the country;
• It is advised that foreigners / visitors contact agencies / tour guides / tour and travel companies to assist them in acquiring private / personal vehicle number plates;
• To make things easier for foreigners / visitors at the other end of the country (on exit), in making payment for the additional fees refundable deposit of 100 LYD, the fees may be deposited for them by a tourist agency on arrival and keep the receipt who claim for their money when the visitor leaves the country.
• Applicants must also get a road license after getting a private number plate in order to be able to drive his / her car on the road.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

There is easy identification. One can easily be located in cases of any emergency as details are provided as one gets the number plate.
