England - Procedure for Getting married/form a Civil partnership abroad

Procedure[edit]

  • If you get marrying or forming a civil partnership abroad, you should contact the Embassy or High Commission of the country concerned.
  • You may be asked for a certificate of no impediment. This is a document required by some foreign authorities to enable a non-national to marry in their country. If you are asked for one, contact your local register office using the Local Register Office finder below.
  • If you are asked to provide an apostille, a formal confirmation that a signature, seal or stamp appearing on a document is genuine, contact the Foreign & Commonwealth Office on +44 (0)3700 00 22 44.

Required Documents[edit]

  • Certificate of no impediment

You will be asked for documentary evidence to prove, for example, your name, nationality, age and address. Check below to see which documents you can use. Take these documents with you to your appointment to give notice.

Your nationality
  • We can accept one or more of the following:
    • Current passport
    • Current UK Drivers licence - with or without photo (if you were born in the UK after 1 January 1983 you may need further documentation to prove your nationality)
    • British birth certificate (if you were born in the UK after 1 January 1983 you may need further documentation to prove your nationality)
    • Current national identity card or driving licence issued outside the UK (with photo), if this states nationality
    • Home Office naturalisation certificate
    • Home Office travel document
    • UK Biometric residence permit (BRP)
    • UK Immigration status document (with photo on document)
  • We can't accept the following:
    • Expired passport
    • Non-British birth certificate
    • Current national identity card or driving licence issued outside the UK (with photo), if this does not state nationality
    • Application Registration Card (ARC)
    • Form IS96 (temporary immigration admission)
    • UK Immigration status document (without photo on document)
Your Name
  • We can accept one or more of the following:
    • Current passport
    • Current UK drivers licence (with or without photo)
    • Home Office naturalisation certificate
    • Home Office travel document
    • UK Biometric residence permit (BRP)
    • UK Immigration status document (with photo on document)
    • Current national identity card or driving licence issued outside the UK (with photo)
  • We can't accept the following:
    • Expired passport
    • A birth certificate (British or non-British)
    • Application Registration Card (ARC)
    • Form IS96 (temporary immigration admission)
    • UK Immigration status document (without photo on document)
Your age
  • We can accept one or more of the following:
    • Current passport
    • UK drivers licence (with or without photo)
    • British birth certificate
    • Non-British birth certificate
    • Home Office naturalisation certificate
    • Home Office travel document
    • UK Biometric residence permit (BRP)
    • UK Immigration status document (with photo on document)
    • Current national identity card or driving licence issued outside the UK (with photo)
  • We can't accept the following:
    • Expired passport
    • Application Registration Card (ARC)
    • Form IS96 (temporary immigration admission)
    • UK Immigration status document (without photo on document)
Proof of your address
  • UK Drivers licence (showing address)
  • Bank statement dated within last 3 months
  • Council tax bill dated within last 3 months
  • Utility bill (e.g. gas, electric) dated within last 3 months
  • Letter signed by someone who is able to confirm your period of residence at address

If you dont have any of these documents, talk to the Superintendent Registrar of the district where you want to give notice. They will tell you if theres any other evidence they can accept.
