Procedure[edit]

1.) Make a call to the Passport Adviceline to book an appointment at a Passport Customer Service Centre.

2.) If your are using the Premium 1-day service, you may book for an appointment before 11am on Saturdays, and on weekdays before:

  • 4pm in London
  • 1:30pm in Liverpool
  • 1pm in Peterborough
  • 12:30pm in Glasgow and Newport
  • midday in Belfast and Durham

3.) Get a passport application form and guide on how to fill it in from a Post Office.

4.) You must be at the appointed place 10 minutes before the appointed time. Bring a completed application form and supporting documents to Her Majestys Passport Office.

5.) For applicants using the Premium 1-day service, your passport will be issued to you within the day. You may proceed to the Passport Customer Service Centre to collect your passport. For those availing the Fast Track 1-week service, your passport will be sent to your home within 1 week (not including bank and public holidays). To be sure that you will receive your passport in a week, make sure that you have submitted a properly filled in application form and all the supporting documents. You may also need to sign for the delivery of your passport.

NOTE:

  • There may be a delay to your application if there are mistakes on your form, or you dont provide the necessary documents at your appointment.
  • Another person can go to your appointment and collect your passport if youre unable to (as long as youre in the UK at the time). They would have to bring the following:
    • their own ID, eg passport, driving licence or a utility bill issued within the last 3 months
    • a signed and dated letter from you naming the person and giving them permission (if the application is for a child, the person who signed section 9 of the form must sign this permission letter)
    • that person will also need to bring the application receipt if theyre collecting your passport. The cashier issues the receipt when they accept the passport application.
  • British Passports belong to the government and can be cancelled or withdrawn at any time.

Upgrading a standard application

If you have already applied to renew your passport by post or through the Check & Send service, you can have it upgraded to the Premium service.

Upgrading is usually available in special circumstances like when you have change your travel plans at short notice.

To check if you can avail of the Premium Service you may call the Passport Adviceline, they will tell you if you can upgrade - the service isnt always available during Her Majestys Passport Offices busy periods. When you call the Passport Adviceline make sure that you have the barcode number of your application. This was on your application form, or on your receipt if you used Check & Send.

Refunds

Refund is possible for the Premium or Fast Track service fee (but not the standard passport fee) if your application isnt processed within the specified time.

A refund is also possible in the following cases:

  • youre travelling abroad for medical treatment

Eligibility[edit]

You can obtain a British Passport if you are a British National. Having a British nationality does not guarantee that you are eligible to apply for a passport. For example, you may not get a new passport (or your existing passport may be taken from you) if:

  • youre suspected of a serious crime and an arrest warrant has been issued
  • a court order stops you having a UK passport or restricts your travel
  • youre on bail and bail conditions mean you cant leave the UK
  • youve been brought back to the UK before at the governments expense and havent repaid what you owe
  • youve received a European Union or United Nations order which restricts your travel

A child's passport may be cancelled or not renewed if theres a court order in place stopping the child from leaving the UK.

Your eligibility and entitlement to a British passport will be looked at when you apply.
