- Just know that adoption is forever and though may want it may not be okay for every family member therefore find out if adoption is right for you or are you right for adoption;
- Also think about your strengths.
- Find out if you have finance, meet the age health and relationship requirement; and
- Then find out if you are ready for adoption.
- A person ready to adopt must have love to share with a child and must be longing to provide a loving, stable family for a child.
2.After making a decision of adopting, think about the child you would want to adopt; Decide on the age of a child you would want to adopt, the race and sex.
- It is advised that if applicant is adopting for the first time, he / she must start with narrow expectations of the child they want to adopt, and later to widen their views as the adoption process proceeds.
3.Thereafter contact an agency or adoption facilitator to help in the adoption process. In this case you can contact any authorized agency / facilitator that best serves your needs, of which lists of these are availed at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Labour, Vocational Training and Youth Rehabilitation
4.After selecting an agency / facilitator, also make research on the best financial option that suits you in order to facilitate the adoption process.
- At this stage, the applicant explores costs of adoption, understands the adoption tax credit, learns about fundraising ideas, and also discovers loans / grants are available to help a person facilitate the adoption process;
5.Thereafter gather all documents required and make copies of the same;
6.Ensure that a home study is carried out. This is a thorough investigation of the applicants home, family, relationships.
- The study is done to decide on which type of child would be the best fit for the applicants family.
- The study can be arranged by the adoptive agency (if an applicant contacted one) and if adoption is carried out independently, the adoptive parent is required to find a licensed social worker to perform the home study;
7.Being matched with a child. At this stage, if an agency was contacted, it will help the adoptive parents identify a child that suits their requirements as indicated in step 2;
8.When a child has been identified, adoptive parents think of the most appropriate form of adoption that will make both parties (the adoptive parents and biological parents) feel comfortable.
9.There after legal proceeding to official adopt the child can proceed.
