Procedure

Apply in Person

1. For an active registered member to be able to change and add a new Spouse to his/her National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) health cover, he/his is first required to remove the previous spouse from his/her current cover then add the new spouse to the health cover, both processes of removal and adding/changing spouse information are initiated at any of the NHIF branch offices or any Huduma Centre countrywide.
2. The member is required to present the following documents to be verified by the NHIF staff at either office:
   • Copy of divorce certificate.
   • Copy of the marriage certificate of the new spouse to be added or an affidavit from an advocate/magistrate or commissioner of oaths.
   • Copy of national identification card for the principal member.
   • Copy of the new spouse’s national identification card.
3. The member is issued with an NHIF-Application for amendment /Update form, which is also downloadable via the NHIF website; NHIF Forms or directly download via this NHIF-Application for amendment /Update form
4. Upon obtaining the form, carefully complete the appropriate information under relevant sections, authorized personnel should attest the form with their signature once completed.
5. Attach copies of the supporting documentation and submit them for processing. No fees are charged for this service.
6. The NHIF staff will then proceed to change and register the new spouse’s information into the NHIF system immediately.
7. In case of a change of wife/husband the new spouse will only access benefits after 28 days from the date amendment is done

Eligibility

• All active NHIF registered members, who wish to remove a spouse from their cover and add a new wife due to the following circumstances are eligible to apply for this service.
  • Death of the spouse
  • Divorce of the spouse.

Fees

• No fees are associated with this service.
