Apply Online

  1. To apply for an Electrical Grade, the applicant should make the application online to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) through the EPRA portal via this EPRA Licencing Portal.
  2. On the portal, if the applicant already has an account, the applicant will be required to enter his/her user name, password, and type in the security the correct security code and then click on the “Login” button to login into the EPRA Licencing Portal.
  3. If the applicant does not have an account, the applicant is required to create one by clicking on the “Create Account” hyperlink to go to the creating account page.
  4. Then the applicant will be required to create an account with the options provided i.e Personal Account or Business Account.
  5. Click on the “ Create a Personal Account” button to go to the sign-up page and provide the required details ie Personal Details, Login Details and enter the provided security code correctly.
  6. Upon providing all the required details, the applicant should click on the “Signup” button and if the information provided is correct, the system will send an email to the applicant with the activation email.
  7. The applicant should open the email from the “ERC Kenya” and click on the activation link to be directed to the EPRA Licencing Portal.
  8. Then the applicant should enter her/her user name and password and enter the security code correctly and log in to her/her account.
  9. Once logged in, on the dashboard page under “New License Application”, the applicant should click on the “Electrician” radio button in the “Electricity Sector” tab to open the electrician license details on the right side of the page.
  10. The applicant should read all the provided details and click on the “Continue with Registration” button to go to the license application form.
  11. Enter the Bio Date information click on the “Next” button to go to the license class.
  12. Select the license class and click on the “Next” button to go to the minimum qualification page and choose the academic qualification and click on the “Next” button to go to the work experience page.
  13. Add the work experience and click on the “Save” button to go to the Academic qualification page.
  14. Added the academic qualification and click on the “Save” button to go to the Knowledge of Rules page.
  15. The applicant should select the rules he/she is familiar with and click on the “Next” button to go to the other license page.
  16. Here the applicant should any other license has acquired and if the applicant does not have any additional license, the applicant should click on the “Next” button to go to the referee’s page.
  17. Added at least two Referee's Licence Number and click on the “Confirm Referee's Licence” button to add the Referee's Licence Number and go to the Documents page.
  18. Upload all the required supporting documents and submit the application.
  19. Then the system will generate the fees details for the application and the applicant will be required to pay the application fees.
  20. Pay the application fees and upload the payment slip.
  21. Upon making the payment submit the application the applicant will receive a notification informing the applicant that he/she has successfully submitted the application.
  22. The application will be reviewed by an assessment officer at the Energy Regulatory Commission office within 15 to 20 days.
  23. upon the review process, the applicant will be invited to attend a written interview at the Energy Regulatory Commission office. Note the interview application will be sent to the applicant through his/her email address.
  24. The applicant should complete the written interview and obtain the interview’s results.
  25. Then the applicant will be invited for an oral interview at the Energy Regulatory Commission office.
  26. Attend the oral interview and obtain the interview’s results.
  27. Upon a successful oral interview, the Energy Regulatory Commission will contact the applicant and inquire the applicant to pay the license fee within 30 days from the date of the notification.
  28. Then the applicant should pay the license fee within the issued time frame and obtain the payment receipt.
  29. Once the license fees are paid, the Energy Regulatory Commission will process the electrician license with the appropriate and issue it to the applicant.

EligibilityEdit

Applicants with the following qualification are eligible to apply:

  • Minimum Technical qualification for Class A-1; BSC in Electrical Engineering and Registered as Electrical Engineer by ERB
  • Minimum Technical qualification for Class A-2; Electrical Wireman Grade II and other equivalent certificates
  • Minimum Technical qualification for Class B; Higher National Diploma in Electrical Engineering and Registered as Technician Engineer by ERB
  • Minimum Technical qualification for Class C-1; Higher National Diploma, BSC in Electrical Engineering and other equivalent Certificates
  • Minimum Technical qualification for Class C-2; Electrical Wiremen Grade I, Grade II or Grade III, Final Craft Certificate, Diploma in Electrical Engineering, and other Equivalent Certificates.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • The electrician’s license entitles the holder to carry out all types of electrical installation work in Kenya without supervision. A person shall not carry out any electrical installation work unless the person is licensed by the Commission as an electrician.

Different classes of license :
Class C-2, to carry out electrical installation work for connection to a single-phase supply at low voltage to up to two-story residential and commercial buildings not used as factories or places of public entertainment;

Class C-1, to carry out electrical installation work as in Class C-2, and for connection to a three-phase supply at low voltage to up to four-story buildings not used as factories or places of public entertainment;

Class B, to carry out electrical installation work as in Class C-1, but without limitation as to the number of stories in the buildings and whether used as factories or places of public entertainment or otherwise, and for connection to supply metered at voltages not exceeding medium;

Class A-1, to carry out all kinds of electrical installation work;

Class A-2, to carry out work specialized electrical installation work
