Apply In-Person

  1. To import a motor vehicle or motorcycle in Jamaica, you must first obtain an import permit from the Trade Board of Jamaica. Please view Trade board contact details and location map via this link:Link
  2. Apply for the import permit in person by downloading the application form: Link for the import permit complete it and pay the application fee then submit the complete application alongside all the required documents mentioned in the “Required Documents”section below to the Trade Board office for Processing within twenty-four hours
  3. You can also submit your application for the import permit online using the Jamaica Single Window for Trade (JSWIFT) portal. Kindly refer to wikiprocedure: Jamaica - Import License / Permit to view the complete procedure for applying for the permit online.
  4. Upon obtaining the import permit order, have your motor vehicle/cycle to be shipped to Jamaica through the port of entry
  5. Once the shipment has arrived, you will need to go to Jamaican Customs to clear your Motor vehicle/cycle. You can view the Jamaican Customs Agency contact details through this link: Link
  6. Before you go to the Customs office, you need to prepare the required supporting documents for the clearance. The documents include:
    • Bill of sight (This must be prepared by a certified customs broker)
    • Simplified Administration Document (This must be prepared by a certified customs broker)
    • Import License
    • Title From the supplier
    • Invoice from the supplier
    • Bill of lading fromthe shipping agent
    • A tax compliance certificate from the Jamaican Tax office
  7. Once you have gathered all the required clearance documents, submit them to the customs office who will validate them and conduct the process of clearing the motor vehicle/cycle
  8. Once cleared your motor vehicle/cycle will be allowed entry to Jamaica
Note that anyone who imports a motor vehicle without first obtaining a valid Import Licence will be liable to a fine three times the value of the motor vehicle plus seizure of the motor vehicle.

  • The cost for a motor vehicle online application is $6,407.50 per unit, while the manual application is $6,407.50 + $2,330.00 (walk-in fee) per unit

InstructionsEdit

  • An individual or Returning Resident is allowed to import one motor car and one light commercial vehicle or two light commercial vehicles; or one light commercial vehicle and a regular commercial vehicle within three years, according to the age guidelines specified in Section 6.0 of the Policy.
  • Companies, except for certified motor vehicle dealers, are allowed to import three units within the age limits specified in the Policy, over three years. A twelve-month restrictive clause prohibiting the unauthorized sale, transfer, or pledging of such vehicles will be incorporated in the import permits approved for importation by such companies. Any requirement for more than three units within the specified period must be satisfied through purchases from local certified dealers.
  • An import license is not required to import heavy-duty trucks or trailers. However, the importer (individual or company) must first obtain written permission from the Island Traffic Authority BEFORE importing the vehicle/s.
