ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person

  1. You must first obtain a minister’s marriage license through the Ministry of Justice (MOJ). You can view their contact details via this link: Link
  2. Visit the MOJ office customer service section to obtain the marriage declaration form and a blank minister's marriage license form. You can also obtain the declaration form online through the MOJ website: Link or download it directly via this link: Link
  3. Have the Declaration form filled correctly using the tips provided in the “Instructions” section below by a declarant (proxy) in the presence of a Justice of the peace (JP), The declarant can be a friend, family member or a marriage officer
  4. Then get the blank minister's marriage license form stamped at the Stamp Duty Office located at 111 Harbor Street, Kingston, Jamaica for a stamp duty fee of Jamaican Four Thousand Dollars (J$4,000.00)
  5. Obtain and prepare all the required documents of both parties to be married. If you are not in Jamaica, you can send these documents to a proxy who can assist you with this process.
  6. Return both the complete declaration form and the stamped minister's marriage license form alongside all the required documents to the MOJ office customer service section
  7. The official at the customer service section will verify your application and if it is correct, will forward it for processing.
  8. Your application will then be approved and processed by the responsible MOJ department and the minister marriage license will be issued to you.
  9. Then proceed with the marriage ceremony conduct by a registered marriage officer.
  10. After marriage, visit the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) office to obtain the Original Marriage Certificate.


Note that

  1. Visitors can be married 24 hours after arriving in Jamaica, providing application is completed.
  2. The copy of the Marriage Register presented to you after your wedding is not a legal document and as such cannot be used to conduct business. You must obtain a certified copy of your marriage certificate at the Registrar General’s Department

  • Divorce Absolute (If applicable)
  • Death Certificate of Spouse if applicable
  • Deed Poll (If applicable)
  • Copy of passport form parties form abroad
  • Persons age sixteen and seventeen years need parental consent which takes the form of a letter signed by the parent in the presence of a Justice of the Peace

Marriage certificate with entry number:

  • First Copy: J$ 1500
  • Additional Copy: J$ 500
  • Two Copies: J$ 2000


Marriage certificate without entry number:

  • First Copy: J$ 1750
  • Additional Copy: J$ 500
  • Two Copies: J$ 2250


ValidityEdit

  • The minister’s marriage license is valid for 90 days after the date of issue however the marriage certificate obtained from the RDG is valid forever unless the marriage is nullified by a court of law or the spouses go through a divorce or death of one spouse

InstructionsEdit

Please ensure that all relevant sections of the deceleration form are properly completed i.e.

  • Names in full means “first, middle, and last name”
  • Condition means “bachelor or spinster/divorced/widow/widower”
  • Calling means “occupation”
  • Dwelling places and parishes mean “local address and parish of both parties.” If either of the parties is residing abroad, twenty-four (24) hours residence in the Island is required and at which time a local address can be used.
