Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for a driver’s license in Canada the applicant will need to first get a Learner’s license.
  2. Visit one of the DMV offices.

  4. Study for the test, find a study guide under the “Documents
  5. to use” section of this page.
    • You do not need to make an appointment, but call the office in advance to determine if there is a test on the day you are going.
    • The applicant will have to pay a fee.
    • The applicant will get a receipt, take this receipt to write the test.
    • The registry agent will check to see if you have good vision.
    • Once the applicant passes these tests, a learners license will be issued.
    • The applicant will receive a temporary license which they can use until the license card arrives by mail.
    • Once the applicant receives the license card, they will have to destroy the temporary license.
  6. After 12 months, the applicant is eligible for a class 5N license on a probationary basis, follow these steps to apply:

    • The applicant will have to pass a vision test.

    • Once the applicant passes these tests, they can buy the license card.
    • The applicant will be given a temporary license card until the card arrives through mail.
    • If the applicant fails the test, they can retake the test after 7 days.

  • Your numbered Driver Examination Receipt (which proves that you have paid for the road test).

For a class 7 license, the applicant must be:

  • 16 years of age
  • The applicant can only drive with someone who is over 18 years of age and has a class 5 DL or higher.


For a class 5N

  • The applicant must be 17 years of age.

  • The applicant will have to pay a fee for the written test as well as the driving test.

  • The learner’s license is valid for 2 years.
  • The full license is valid for 5 years.
