Procedure

Apply through mail

1. To obtain Import Permit or License for Species Harmful to Canadian Ecosystems through mail, the applicant has to send a mail application to the mailing address of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) office.
2. First, the applicant has to download the respective application form from the following
   • Low risk category Low risk Caudata specimen
   • High risk category High risk Caudata specimen
   • Other species Schedule 2 species
3. Download the applicable application form and complete it with appropriate details in the respective fields.
4. Once the application has been filled out completely, the applicant should attach the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page, with the completed application form.
5. Then, send the application form and other documents to the mailing address mentioned in the application form, through a safe and secure mail service.
6. If the mailing address is not found in the application form, it can be found here: CITES Permitting Office, Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment Canada, 351, St. Joseph Blvd Gatineau, Quebec K1A 0H3.
7. Fees details can be obtained by contacting the CITES office. They may ask the applicant to send the fees along with the application form.
8. Upon receipt of the application package and appropriate fees, the Office will start assessing the application and attached documents.
9. On completion of the assessment and verification, the applicant will be issued with the import/export permit as required by the applicant.
10. The application processing will be completed within 35 calendar days.

Eligibility

• Any person in Newfoundland and Labrador, who wants to import harmful species from any foreign country inside the city of Newfoundland and Labrador, can apply.
• The importer must possess the permit to capture or remove specimen of the harmful species.
• The importer should also possess the foreign permit required to transport the species from the location of export.

Fees

• Please obtain the fees details from the office.

Validity

• CITES permit is usually valid up to six months for export purposes and twelve months for import purposes.

• The applicants are advised to read the application form carefully and fill all the fields with appropriate details. Incomplete applications would cause delays in processing.
• The applicant should attach a pre-paid envelope or include their courier account number, with the application form if they wish to receive their permit by courier.
• Due to the nature of the risk with the import of specimens of Caudata (such as salamanders, newts and mudpuppies), two categories have been identified low risk or high risk. So, the applicants should identify and submit the applicable application form.
