West Virginia - How to obtain a Divorce Certificate

In Person

You may go to Clerk of Circuit Court, Chancery Side, in county where divorce was granted with as much as information and appropriate fee.

By Mail

Type a brief letter requesting a copy of your certified divorce certificate. In the letter, include the as much as required information.
You should also note your relationship to the parties in the divorce papers as well as the purpose for which you are requesting a copy. With appropriate fee.
Include a self-addressed and stamped envelope to ensure quick delivery of the papers.
Mail the application to Clerk of Circuit Court, Chancery Side, in county where divorce was granted.

Required DocumentsEdit

Any one of the following forms of Identification:

State Issued Driver's license (can be expired)
United States, or Foreign passports
Military ID
Photo-ID cards from a government sponsored program

Or any two following forms of Identification

Major Credit Card
Motor Vehicle Registration card
State Social Services program card
A recent utility bill in the name of the person who is requesting the certificate.

If you do not have any of these forms of ID, exceptions can be granted on a case-by-case basis.

West Virginia Divorce index have been maintained by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources for individuals divorced in the state of West Virginia since 1967.
Certified copies are not available from State office.
For certificates reach Clerk of Circuit Court, Chancery Side, in county where divorce was granted.
