ProcedureEdit

In Person

  1. Go to a drivers license office
  2. Complete a drivers license application, to save you some time you can:
    1. Fill out and print the application ahead of time online and bring it with you when you go to the office, or
    2. You can schedule an appointment prior to your visit to avoid waiting in line.
  3. Have your photo taken.
  4. Pass the eye test.
  5. Complete the medical questionnaire.
  6. Present proof of birth, full social security number, current Utah driver license, and if your residence has changed from what is on your current driver license, or you don't have your current driver license in possession, you will be required to provide two proofs of your Utah residence.
  7. Pass a 25 question open-book test; and
  8. Pay the nonrefundable fee of $25.00.

Note: A 25 question written test may be required if you have had more than 4 citations in 5 years, have been suspended or revoked, or your license has been expired for more than 6 months.


Renew Online

Those who have received a letter in the mail with a pin number to RENEW ONLINE, you may visit the LINK to start the renewal process. You can renew your Utah driver license 6 months prior to the expiration date.

The online renewal service is limited to license/ID Card holders who have already verified their identity with the Driver License Division after January 1, 2010. If qualified, you will have received a notice by mail with your PIN authorization. If you need to verify your identity, you will need to schedule an appointment using the Driver License Online Scheduling Application.

Note: If your current status is Not Valid you may not be able to renew a driver license. If you have a question about your driving status contact the customer service department at: (801) 965-4437, or 1-888-353-4224. You may also visit http://publicsafety.utah.gov/dld/

  • Original motorcycle endorsement (add fee to duplicate or renewal fee): $9.50
  • Original taxicab endorsement (add fee to duplicate or renewal fee): $7.00
  • Lapsed/Renewal of Utah license: $25.00
  • Lapsed/Renewal of Utah license (65 and older): $13.00
  • Lapsed/Renewal of Motorcycle license (All Ages): $27.50
  • Lapsed/Renewal of a Motorcycle endorsement (add fee to duplicate or renewal fee): $9.50
  • Lapsed/Renewal of a taxicab endorsement (add fee to duplicate or renewal fee): $7.00
  • Identification card: $18.00
  • Identification card for person with a disability: $13.00

Online Renewal Fees:

  • Extension of a Utah driver license (over 21) : $20.00
  • Extension of a Utah driver license (65 and older): $11.00
  • Extension of a Utah driver license (under 21): $20.00
  • Extension of a Utah Motorcycle license (under 21): $22.50
  • Extension of a Utah Motorcycle endorsement: $9.50
  • Extension of a Utah taxicab endorsement: $7.00


Other Fees:

  • Administrative fee for providing the driving record of an operator (MVR) $6.00 -
  • Certified Record (includes copy of MVR) :
    • First of 15 pages: $10.75
    • 16 - 30 pages: $15.75
    • 31 - 45 pages: $20.75
    • 46 or more pages: $25.75

If your Utah driver license will expire while you are temporarily out of state, you can apply to renew your Utah driver license more than six months prior to the expiration date if you provide proof that you will be absent from the state during the six-month period prior to the expiration date of your license.
