This procedure describes an acceptable means in Ethiopia, but not the only means, to comply with the requirements for identifying aircraft, aircraft engines, or propellers with identification plates, and marking aircraft with nationality and registration marks of Ethiopia.
- Step I
- Written Application for Identification Number plate:
Start by Submitting a written application for aircraft identification plate to the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority.Pick the form from the Head office fill the application form and after filling attach the required Documents. The instruction and registration process on how to fill the form are indicated behind the application form, please follow the instructions on the form.

- Attach Support Documents:
You are then required to submit support document to prove ownership of the Air craft. The document submitted also include application for a Aircraft number plate and these include;
- Document(s) to prove the aircraft ownership, (e.g. Bill of Sale, e.t.c.);
- A copy of a government issued Identity Card (ID) or Passport if owned by an individual, or any other identification card approved by the Authority;
- A certified copy of the Certificate of incorporation if owned by a company;
- Names of the directors of the company owning or leasing the aircraft and their specimen signatures giving authority to register and/or *operate the aircraft in Ethiopia and indicating who among them has the mandate to transact on their behalf on matters relating to the aircraft registration and/or operation;
- A certified copy of the lease agreement if the aircraft is on lease with stamp duties paid;
- A certified copy of the power of attorney from the owner/lessor and the lessee, (both of them);
- A certified copy of an aircraft current Insurance Certificate; and
- Proof of payment of the prescribed fees (see Fees Schedule in the Ethiopia CARs).

When documents are received, they are then examined to assess if all requirements are met and the desired number is sent to the issuing authority for verification;

Thereafter, obtain a special number request form, fill it and then make payment for registration, Aircraft number plate, weighing and registration fee.

Upon an applicant meeting all requirements for registration, an Aircraft identification number is issued to the applicant by the Authority
- The ECAA requires that only the information above be included on the identification plates for the Aircraft manufactured under a licensing agreement program with Ethiopia. However, the ECAA would permit a company/corporate logo or registered trademark to be included (after review and approval by the ECAA) on the identification plates if desired by the manufacturer. Aircraft, aircraft engine, and propeller data plates should be included as part of the products approved design data and are usually defined in an engineering drawing describing such factors as material, size, required information entries, and mounting location
- Note
- The Authority requires that the letters to be in Roman characters and to be without ornamentation. Fancy letters are not permitted. For the side lettering a slope of not more than 30 degrees is acceptable.
- No other letter or number may be inserted anywhere around the nationality and registration marks.
- The graphics must always be kept clean and visible.
- The size of the letters must not be less than the specified dimensions and the height of the letters for underwings markings must be a minimum of 50 cm.
- The standard side markings required to be displayed on the fuselage or tail of an aircraft should normally be not less than 30cm.
- Nationality and registration marks have to be of the same single colour and distinct from the background on which the letters are placed, and must be given adequate separation from other markings.

- A Certificate or notice of de-registration from the previous state of registry or a letter from the state of manufacture , if the aircraft is new and has never been registered in any other state, confirming non- registration.
- The de-registration certificate must be received by the| Authority directly from the state of registry and should never be presented by the applicant - should be State to State.
- Document(s) to prove the aircraft ownership, (e.g. Bill of Sale, e.t.c.);
- A copy of a government issued Identity Card (ID) or Passport if owned by an individual, or any other identification card approved by the Authority;
- A certified copy of the Certificate of incorporation if owned by a company;

EligibilityEdit
An applicant for aircraft identification Number plate shall meet in full the eligibility requirements stated in Regulation of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority Regulations:
An aircraft is eligible for Ethiopian identification registration number plate if it is
- Owned or Operated by
- A citizen of Ethiopian,
- An individual citizen of another State who is lawfully admitted for permanent residence in Ethiopia,
- A corporation lawfully organized and doing business under the laws of Ethiopia and the aircraft is based and primarily used in Ethiopia,
- A government entity of Ethiopia or political subdivision thereof; or Public enterprises and Developmental Associations of Ethiopia for own use only.
- A foreign person who has leased the aircraft to one of the persons described in paragraphs (i) (iv) above.

Aircraft Owners are required to complete an Application for Aircraft Registration of identification number plate and to register their aircraft with the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority,Division Aircraft Registration Unit if the aircraft is based in Ethiopia.
- No person may operate a civil aircraft registered in Ethiopia unless it displays nationality and registration marks in accordance with the requirements of Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority.
- The letters ET should be used to identify the aircraft nationality as of Ethiopian shall conform to the requirements outlined in Annex 7 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
- This is to be followed by a series of three letters assigned by the Authority.
- Unless otherwise authorized by the Authority, no person may place on any aircraft a design, mark, or symbol that modifies or confuses the nationality and registration marks.
- Marks shall not be used which might be confused with the International Five Letter Code of Signals, Part II, the three- letter combinations beginning with Q used in the Q Code or Distress Codes or other similar, urgent codes.

Need for the DocumentEdit
The owner shall affix to each aircraft registered under the laws of Ethiopia an identification Number plate:-
- Containing the following
- aircraft type,
- model,
- and serial number,
- marks of nationality and
- registration mark; and
- Made of fireproof metal or other fireproof material of suitable physical properties; and
- Secured to the aircraft in a prominent position, near the main entrance, or, in the case of an unmanned free balloon, affixed conspicuously to the exterior of the payload.
The Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority regulations requires that Ethiopian registered aircraft bear nationality and registration marks. It is an offense not to comply with these regulations. There are also tight regulations concerning acceptable lettering and format on the Aircraft.
