Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for Renunciation of Citizenship in person, the applicant has to approach the Ministry of Social Solidarity link
2. Applicants must obtain the application form from the relevant department.
3. Applicants should read carefully the application form, after all the details must be filled in the application form.
4. The applicant has to make sure that he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful, and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
5. A fee for this procedure is has to be paid as per the authority’s request.
6. Complete the application form must be submitted to the authority.
7. The official will verify the application to confirm if the form is completed as required and check if all the required supporting documents have been provided.
8. If the minister or authorized official is satisfied that all the documents are in order the applicant will be notified of the outcome and be issued with the certificate of renunciation of citizenship.
9. Generally, the process can take anywhere from two weeks to several months.

Required Documents

• Original Egyptian passport and one copy
• Original Birth Certificate and one copy
• Original National ID Card and one copy
• Original Military Service Exemption Card and one copy (for males only)
• Original Proof of Residence and one copy
• Original Certificate of Good Conduct and one copy
• Four recent passport-sized photographs
• A letter of renunciation, which must include the reason for renunciation
• A copy of a valid foreign passport
• A copy of a valid residence permit/visa in the new country of residence
• A copy of the marriage certificate (if applicable)
• If applicable, a copy of the death certificate of the deceased relative (husband, wife, father, mother, child)

Eligibility

• In Egypt, only individuals who have obtained dual citizenship through marriage or naturalization may be eligible to renounce their Egyptian citizenship.
• The individual must have held dual citizenship for at least five years prior to applying for renunciation.
• The individual must also have provided evidence of their foreign citizenship, such as a valid foreign passport, and must have resided in the foreign country for at least three years prior to applying for renunciation.
• In addition, the individual must have proof of intention to remain a foreign citizen and must not have any criminal convictions in either Egypt or the foreign state.

Instructions

• Obtain an application form from the Consulate of Egypt in your home country.
• Collect the required documents for the application.
• Contact his/her local Egyptian Embassy or Consulate and make an appointment.
• Submit his/her application for renunciation of the applicant Egyptian citizenship in person at the embassy or consulate.
• Pay the required fee for renunciation of citizenship.
• Receive his/her renunciation certificate from the embassy or consulate.
