Apply In-Person

  • If your Work Permit is lost or stolen, you will need to request a duplicate at the nearest Regional Labour Office, which is under the Department of Labour and Social Security office, Ministry of Employment Labour Productivity, and Skills Development. (Please view address details under office and location contact section below).


Obtain affidavit and police abstract/report

  1. You should start by visiting a police station to report the loss/damage of the work permit. You are also to acquire a police abstract from the police authorities which is a prerequisite to making the application.
  2. You are also to swear an affidavit of the circumstances surrounding the loss, theft, mutilation or damage. You are to attach this affidavit, with your application.


Make the Application

  1. Proceed to the nearest Regional Labour Office, Express your interest to the receptionist/ secretariat at the front desk and Collect the Duplicate Work permit Application Form (Form 6), and fill out all required section accurately. Forms are available at the Enquiries Desk at any of the offices of the Department of Labour.
  2. Submit the completed forms, signed and stamped by your employer, attach to the supporting document file {as listed under the required document section below} to the department concerned attending officer.
  3. The officer will then verify, if all the necessary information and documents have been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria, if everything is in the order you will be required to pay the application fee at the cash counter.
  4. It is only after the deposit of the complete file and the payment of the required fee, that the application file will be registered and recorded and applicants will be issued with an acknowledgement letter containing details of their application.
  5. The completed application file and fee for the duplicate work permit are then submitted to an authorized officer (via designated channels) where the application is reviewed and a recommendation made, which is within 14 days. N.B The authorized officer is entitled to call in the applicant for an interview.
  6. The authorized officer shall consider every application lodged with him in accordance with the application case {lost/stolen damaged) and shall, if he/she is satisfied that the permit has been lost, destroyed, damaged or defaced, issue a duplicate thereof to the applicant.
  7. Applicants will then be notified of the outcome of their application by way of a letter.
  8. If approved the duplicate working permit will then be drawn up, singed, and stamped by the authorized official and made available for withdrawal by the applicant at the Regional Labour Office, where the application was filed against his/her identification document, approval letter, and the acknowledgement letter.

Required DocumentsEdit

  • Statement/Affidavit from the police stating how the permit got lost or damaged.
  • Certified copies of a valid passport, biographic data page (picture, passport number, date of birth, birthplace, expiry, etc.)
  • Copy of the lost permit (if available).
  • Cover letter to the regional office.
  • If one is an employee, your employer should write a letter on your behalf, confirming you are still employed by the company.
  • If one is a director, a fellow director should write an endorsement letter, confirming that you still work with them in the company.
  • Both letters must include the physical address and contact numbers.
  • A letter confirming that they are still employed by the company.
  • 2 x Passport-size photos (with a white background)

  • All expatriate workers who wish to take up employment in Botswana need to apply for a work permit. if your Work Permit is lost, stolen or damaged, you will need to obtain a duplicate.
  • No non-citizens of Botswana may engage in any occupation or investment unless they have been granted a work permit for Botswana under the Employment of the Non-Citizens Act or are the holder of a certificate of exemption.
  • It is further stated that no employer shall engage a non-citizen if the citizen is not a holder of a valid work permit for Botswana or the holder of a certificate of exemption.
