Procedure

Apply In Person:

1. Any person intending to stage a Sports Fishing Competition shall apply to the Director for a recreational fishing competition permit at least two months before the date of such competition/activity at the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP), which is under the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism office. 2. The applicant should submit all the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section for processing and consideration.
3. Those who wish to fish at the camps/lodges should bring a letter from the camp and for the dams, they need an entrance permit from Water Utilities Corporation.
4. Upon receipt of the application file, the licensing officer will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
5. Where the DWNP licensing officer is satisfied that the applicant has provided him with all the required information, and documentation and certifies that the applicant is a fit and proper person, he shall approve the issue of the license, once the payment of the appropriate license fee has been made by the applicant. 6. The permit/license shall be subject to such terms and conditions as the Director deems fit to impose in each case, and such terms and conditions or requirements shall be endorsed on the permit.

Appeals to the Minister:

• Any person who is aggrieved by the refusal of the Director to grant a permit, or by any terms imposed by the Director to grant a permit, may appeal against the refusal or the terms and conditions to the Minister within 30 day.

Eligibility

• Citizens and Non-Citizens who are 18 years of age and above are eligible to apply.

Fees

• Citizens-{BWP30.00 (Monthly)/ BWP360.00 (Annually)}
• Non-Citizens-{BWP300.00 (Monthly)/ BWP600.00 (Annually)}
• Fishing camp/Lodges-BWP 3000 (Annually)

Validity

• The license is valid for either one month or one year.

Instructions

Recreational fishing shall be done-

• Using a single fishing rod, line or hook.
• Any person engaging in recreational fishing shall catch and keep more than five fish in one day.
• Any person engaging in recreational fishing shall release juvenile or undersized fish when caught.

Need for the Document

• The Recreational Fishing license/permit is granted to those who wish to fish for recreational/sports purposes. In Botswana, open fishing season is between March 1st and December 31st annually. Fishing is allowed in all water bodies.
• No person shall participate in a recreational fishing competition unless he or she possesses a valid recreational fishing license.
