Botswana - Examination of Cranes and Other Lifting Equipment (Department of Occupational Health and Safety)

- The Department of Occupational Health and Safety (DOHS) is mandated by the Ministry of Employment, Labour Productivity, and Skills Development to ensure that cranes and other lifting equipment including chains, ropes and gears must be examined by personnel authorized by this department at least once within every 14 months. (Address provided below under” Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page).
- The Operators must hire the services of an authorized examiner from the list of authorized examiners which is updated and gazette throughout the year by the DOHS. The list is available at any DOHS office.
- The operator should contact an authorized examiner and arrange an inspection visit.
- Once an inspection by an authorized examiner has taken place, the examiner will complete the assessment report per his finding of the equipment in question and sign it, if satisfied that the equipment in question has no mechanical issues and he/she will issue the applicant a certified copy: Link (Assessment report to be completed by the examiner).
- Operators must keep this assessment report, logging each inspection on the same premises as the equipment in question and it must be made available to DOHS personnel for inspection at any time.

- Address of factory or other premises where Crane or other lifting appliance is situated
- Description of Appliances
- Identification Mark or Number of the equipment in question
- Safe Working Load (Original)
- Date first taken into use
- The certificate is first taken into use
- Date and particulars of last heat treatment (if applicable)
- Date of Examination
- Defects found
- Action is taken to remedy such defects
- Safe Working Load after the examination (Subject to repairs, renewals, etc.).
