Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. A person who has already acquired a firearm certificate/ gun license may surrender the license to the Licensing Officer at any of the Police Station.Botswana Police Service Contact Details
2. The license holder has to make the application to cancel the license in writing using a prescribed application form. Forms are obtainable at any of thepolice stations, firearm Licensing Officecountrywide.

   Note, in case of voluntary cancellation, the applicant also has to provide any relevant information regarding why he/she wants to cancel the license.

3. Submit the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page, in addition to the duly completed application form in all respect to theFirearm Licensing Office. Any omission of these documents will render the application process incomplete.
4. Upon submission, the application is checked for completeness and correctness by the licensing officer, before it is registered for processing and consideration.
5. The applicant will also be required to submit the registered firearm and all unused ammunition to the firearm licensing office, while submitting the application.
6. The applicant will be issued with an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
7. On receipt of the application file, the licensing officer shall, as soon as practicable, forward the application, together with his recommendation thereon, to the Central Arms Registry office for processing and consideration by the Arm and Ammunition Board.
8. After the successful screening of the submitted documents, a notice of the decision (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) for the application will be communicated to the Central Arms Registry,register office by the board.
9. If approved,theregistrar shall remove the applicant's name and firearm details from the Central Arms Registry and notify the firearm Licensing office that forward the application of the removal.
10. On completion of this process, the applicant will receive the written confirmation of the, de-registration from the Central Arms Registry, at the specific police station, firearm licensing office, where the application was lodged and against their identification document and the acknowledgment slip.
11. The application is free of charge.

Important Notes

• A firearm certificate or license may be cancelled or revoked by the Chief Licensing Officer if:-
  • He is satisfied that the holder is prohibited by or under this Act from possessing a firearm to which the firearm certificate relates, or is of intemperate habits or unsound mind or is otherwise unfit to be entrusted with a firearm.
  • If any person makes any statement which he knows to be false for the purpose of procuring, whether for himself or any other person, the grant of a firearm certificate, or the variation or renewal of a firearm certificate, he shall be guilty of an offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or to a fine not exceeding BWP 5,000.00 or to both. • In any case where a firearm certificate is revoked by a licensing Officer, he shall by a notice in writing, require the holder to surrender the firearm certificate, and if the holder fails to do so within fourteen days from the date of the notice, he shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine.
