Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. You should contact the Registration and Licensing Officer at any of the Department of Road Transport and Safety offices near you, for more information on how to file the application with the department.
2. Accurately fill in the application form (Form RTS 1 - Application for Initial Grand or Amendment or Renewal of Road Transport Permit) which can be obtained from the Department of Road Transport and Safety offices
3. Submit the completed form along with the required supporting documentation (as listed below) for verification and processing.
4. Pay the application fee of BWP100.00 to the Registration and Licensing Officer
5. On a schedule date and time, you will be required to attend Transport Advisory Board hearing and at this point that the decision would be made regarding your application.
6. If approved, you will be required to take the vehicle to the Transport Inspectors for inspection. If inspection is failed, applicants must comply with Inspector's instructions to rectify any vehicle issues that may have caused the failure and reapply.
7. If your vehicles pass the inspection phrase you will be issued inspection certificates.
8. Then Take the inspection certificate and all of the other supporting documents to the Registration and Licensing Officer and pay the permit fee. Once fee is paid, the permit will be issued.
   

Note

• If applicants need to begin operations immediately, they may apply for a temporary permit by filling an additional application form for a temporary (short term) permit that is valid for three months, and paying an additional application fee.
• Where applicants do not own a vehicle at time of application, after approval, there is a three-month time limit within which they must purchase a vehicle for operations.

• Copy of the vehicle's registration document (blue book).
• Copy of vehicle's valid Roadworthiness Certificate (at the point of certificate collection).
• Vehicle Inspection Certificate (only if permit application is approved by the board).
• Copy of company's Certificate of Incorporation.
• Copy of one director's omang or passport (in the case of foreigners).
• Copy of Shareholders' Certificates.

Eligibility

Any locally-registered company that is the owner of a passenger vehicle can apply.

Fees

The fees involved in this process are as follows:

• Application fee of BWP100.00.
• Temporary Permit Fee of BWP32.50 (combis) and BWP52.50 (buses).
• Permit fee of BWP130.00 (combis), and BWP210.00 (buses).

Validity

Employers who wish to transport their employees in company vehicles must get authorization for the use of the vehicles by applying for a staff transportation permit with the Registration and Licensing Officer at any of the Department of Road Transport and Safety offices
