ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person

  1. You should contact the Registration and Licensing Officer at any of the Department of Road Transport and Safety offices near you for more information on how to file the application with the department.
  2. Accurately fill in the application form (Form DRTS 12 - Application for a Vehicle Road worthiness Examination) which can be obtained from the Registration and Licensing Officer.
  3. submit the completed form along with the required supporting documentation (as listed below) for verification and processing.
  4. Pay the required fee to the Registration and Licensing Officer. If the vehicle does not currently have a valid licence, also pay for licence (or temporary licence).
  5. You will then be required to take the vehicle to the Vehicle Testing Station for examination by Vehicle Examiner, first registering the vehicle at the gate.
  6. If the vehicle fails the examination, the owner must rectify the highlighted problems and book for re-examination. Re-examinations within seven calendar days are at no extra cost, and only two re-examinations are allowed
  7. Upon passing the examination, proceed to the Registration and Licensing Officer to collect the Road worthiness Certificate

  • Customs Clearance and Police Clearance Certificates (for vehicles that exceed three years of age and are yet to be registered in Botswana).
  • Original vehicle registration document (blue book) (for vehicles already registered in Botswana).
  • Certified copy of applicant's National ID (Omang) (for vehicles that exceed three years of age and are yet to be registered in Botswana).

EligibilityEdit

Any owner (or designate of the owner) of a vehicle to be used on the roads of Botswana is eligible. The owner must be a Botswana citizen or locally registered business.

ValidityEdit

Road worthiness certificates have different validity period, depending on the category of vehicle:

  • One year for goods vehicles.
  • Six months for passenger transport vehicles.
  • Three months for vehicles being registered or licensed.

InstructionsEdit

Ministry of Transport and Communications inspects all vehicles for roadworthiness and issues roadworthiness certificates for the following categories of vehicles:

  • Any vehicle three years old and above (prior to initial registration and upon expiration of existing certificates).
  • Any vehicle with a gross vehicle mass greater than 3500kg (within three months of being licensed).
  • Any public service vehicle.
