Update your file

You can update your driver's license/State ID card file and your vehicle registration file by visiting a Secretary of State facility, or by submitting your change of address online through this link.
You must submit application for address changes for BOTH your driver's license/State ID card file and your vehicle registration file as they are separate databases. You will need to provide address change information on every vehicle that is registered under your name.

Note:

Name Changes: Name changes cannot be submitted online. If your name has changed you will need to go to a Secretary of State facility to obtain a corrected Illinois driver's license, corrected title and vehicle Registration ID card. Do not forget to bring your driver's license and title and a copy of the marriage certificate or other court document. Fees are required for all corrected documents.

Update the address on your actual license

To those who would like to update the address on their actual driver's license/State ID card:

Visit a Secretary of State facility.
Bring two Acceptable Identification(Group D). List of Acceptable Identification Document
Pay the appropriate fee.

An applicant applying for either a duplicate or corrected drivers license or ID card must present:

one document that satisfies Group A
one document that satisfies Group B, C or D (two documents from Group D if applicant is requesting an address change to appear on the document, unless applicant is under age 5 applying for an ID card or applicant is applying for a no-fee ID card presenting a Homeless Status Certification)
An applicant who requests a change in name, date of birth, Social Security number or gender must provide identification to link the change from the previous information to the new information.

Notes:

Signature comparison is required in the verification process.
The number of documents required depends on whether an applicant is applying for a drivers license/ID card for the first time, or requesting a duplicate or corrected drivers license/ID card.
One document may satisfy more than one group.

Motorcycle First time or upgrade M or L classification: $10.00
Motorcycle Renewal M or L classification: $5.00
Original Instruction Permit: $20.00 If you receive your license prior to the expiration of your instruction permit, you may not need to pay an additional fee.
School Bus Permit Original, Duplicate or Corrected: $4.00

ValidityEdit

Drivers under age 21 licenses expire three months after their 21st birthday
Drivers age 21 through 80 licenses are valid for four years and expire on driver's birthday
Drivers age 81 through 86 licenses are valid for two years
Drivers age 87 and older must renew their licenses each year.

You must notify the Illinois Secretary of State's office within 10 days when your address or name changes.

Drivers who hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must notify the Secretary of State's office of an address or name change within 10 days and must obtain a corrected driver's license within 30 days.

Need for the DocumentEdit

State Law requires motorists to notify the Illinois Secretary of State's office within 10 days when their address or name changes (Illinois Vehicle Code, Sec. 3-416, 6-116 and 6-511). This is important to ensure that you receive your renewal notices and other correspondence at the appropriate address.
