Emissions TestEdit

To see if your vehicle needs an emissions test, check your registration renewal notice.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for the emission testing program and laws.

Emissions test results are immediately sent electronically to MVD. It is not necessary to wait after completing your emissions test before renewing online or by phone.

For those who are temporarily out of state and require a vehicle emissions test, visit the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality website or call Phoenix at 602.771.3950 or Tucson at 520.628.5651.

Emissions Control Areas

If your registration renewal notice reads "No Emissions Test Required," it is based on your address on file and your vehicle year. However, an emissions test may still be required if your vehicle is used to commute into an Air Quality Control area (including greater metro Phoenix and Tucson).

Renew your vehicle registration online

Before you begin the online renewal process, you must check the following first:

Your address, see if the address on your vehicle registration form matches your current address, then see if your address is correct.
If your vehicle needs to undergo emissions testing.
Your vehicle renewal form or license plate number.

Renew your vehicle registration by phone

You can also renew your vehicle registration by phone, using MVD's 24-hour, automated, toll-free service at 888.713.3031. Check the renewal form if your vehicle needs to undergo emissions testing.

Before calling, have the following items ready:

Your renewal notice or registration (current or expired)
Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express credit/debit card.
A pen or pencil

Note: A $25.00 returned check fee is charged for any check returned by a financial institution, and may result in cancellation of vehicle registrations and driving privileges.

Renew your vehicle registration by mail:

Bring your vehicle in for an emissions test, if applicable. The MVD receives the results, so don't worry about presenting a certificate when you renew.
Complete and mail in your renewal form to:

Renew your vehicle registration in person:

If applicable, have your vehicle's emissions tested. The MVD will receive the results electronically.
Have your renewal notice or registration certificate handy.

EligibilityEdit

If you have valid registered motor vehicle you can renew your motor vehicle registration before it expires.

FeesEdit

The State of Arizona has a flat registration fee of $8.00 per year, but the real charges come in the form of the vehicle license tax (VLT). The VLT is figured based on the value of your vehicle, so it varies year to year. The state also charges an air quality research tax of $1.50, and various fees for specialized or personalized license plates. See link to learn how your vehicle registration fees are calculated.

Another fee related to all registered vehicles is the insurance payment. Although you don't need to show proof of insurance when you renew your registration, you do need to have it. The MVD receives electronic notification about the insurance policies of drivers, and will cancel your registration if your policy lapses.

Returned Checks

A $25.00 fee is charged for any check returned by a financial institution, and may result in the cancellation of your vehicle registrations and driving privileges.

Tab Replacement

If a combined month/year tab has been lost, stolen or damaged, you can order a replacement online, you will need to pay the $5.00 fee. The replacement tab comes with a replacement registration document.
