Karnataka - How to Renew a Driving Licence

ProcedureEdit

Renewal of driving license for the one obtained from another state can be processed with the NOC obtained from home state RTO. For regular renewal you don’t require NOC - (Please check with local RTO whether NOC is required before processing)

  1. As a first step, get a NOC (No Objection Letter) from the RTO that issued the license initially (For other state)
    1. One can get the NOC directly applying in his home town RTO
    2. If it is not possible to go to the issuing RTO physically, send a letter requesting for NOC. Please send it using either India Post's Registered Post with Acknowledgement Due or through Speed Post with Acknowledgement Due. You will receive the acknowledgement confirming that the letter has been received by the RTO (that issued the license).
  2. Retain the following -
    1. Copy of the NOC request letter
    2. The acknowledgement slip/card that you received via regular post/mail



Apply In-Person:

  1. Applicant has to approach the RTO office to which his area belongs to. Please follow our “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page to get details of the RTO offices. Link for RTO contacts: Contacts Link

  3. Completed application in Form 9 : Form 9 Link
  4. Please make sure you have all the required documents to process the application
  5. The applicant should make sure they are eligible for applying
  6. Application forms can also be obtained from the appropriate RTO offices that should be completed and presented with appropriate fees.
  7. Present the completed application forms along with required documents in one of the counter and pay the appropriate fee where the officials would start processing your application.
  8. If the driver license renewal authority is satisfied with the application and the documents submitted, the driver license will be renewed.
Note : For renewal of home state license, you don’t require the NOC.



Apply Online:

  1. To renew a driving license, the applicant has to visit the official portal of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways: Link to Portal
  2. In the homepage, please scroll down to “Informational Services” and click on the “more” button in the “Citizen Guide” tab.
  3. The applicant will be taken to the “Manual” page where all the available services will be listed.
  4. Please click on the name of the required service and click on “Step by Step procedure” from the drop down menu.
  5. The applicant will be taken to a new PDF page where the process for applying will be explained clearly.
  6. Please follow the steps to complete the application.

  • Medical certificate in Form-1a (if the applicant is above 50 years) with Gazetted Officers sign across the photo and at mentioned place with his seal
  • Driving License
  • Proof of Age
  • Passport size photos-2 copies

  • Self Addressed Stamped Envelope (for ₹30 you can buy at the front of the RTO shops)

EligibilityEdit

  • An application for renewal shall be made not more than one month before the date of expiry of the license.
  • If the application is late for more than five years after the date of expiry of the license, the applicant should undergo all the formalities to obtain a fresh license.

ValidityEdit

  • License to drive a Non-Transport Vehicle is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or until the holder attains the age of 50 years, whichever is earlier. After that, the License is renewed every 5 years.
  • Transport Vehicle License is valid for a period of 3 years from the date of issue or renewal.

InstructionsEdit

  • You may apply to renew your driver license to Regional Transport Officer/ Motor Vehicle Inspector Grade I
  • The driving License is renewed with effect from the date of its expiry when the application is made before its expiry or within thirty days grace period.
  • The driving License is renewed with effect from the date of renewal when the application is made after the grace period.
  • The driving License cannot be renewed after the period of five years when it has ceased to be effective.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • As per Motor Vehicle Act 1988, a valid Driving License is necessary to drive any motor vehicle on public roads
  • In case of a person shifting / settling from one state to another should and must apply for renewing his license in the present state
  • This renewed driving license will be considered as a proof of residence in the new state
