ProcedureEdit

  1. If you are sending your application online and your family members will accompany you to Sweden, you can include them in your own application online.
  2. If they apply after you have applied, each family member must complete the form Application for permit for family members of employees, visiting researchers, athletes and self-employed persons, no. 133011, and submit it to the Swedish embassy or consulate general in the country in which they live. Before you submit your application you should contact the embassy or consulate-general.
  3. Wait for the Migration Board's decision.
  4. The decision will be sent to the embassy or consulate general. The member of your family must take their passport along when picking up the decision. The Swedish embassy or consulate general will hand over or send their card to them as soon as it is ready. Don't forget that it might take up to four weeks to make and send the card to the embassy or consulate general after they receive their decision.
  5. The residence permit card must be presented along with a valid passport when entering Sweden. If your family can travel to Sweden without a visa, they should be able to show a copy of the decision when they arrive in Sweden. As soon as possible after they have arrived in Sweden, they should visit the Migration Board to provide fingerprints and be photographed. When the residence permit card is ready, it will be sent to the address in Sweden. Book an appointment at the Migration Board to be fingerprinted and photographed if your family can travel without residence permit cards

If the Migration Board refuses your family's application, they may appeal the decision within three weeks of the day you received it. Information on how to do this can be found in the decision.

Residence Permit Card

If your family members obtain a permit for more than three months, they will also receive a residence permit card. If they need a visa for travel to Sweden, they should visit the Swedish embassy or consulate general as soon as possible to be photographed and fingerprinted. Contact an embassy or consulate general prior to their visit. Contact them primarily through email.

Individuals who do not require a visa for travel to Sweden will be fingerprinted and photographed at the Swedish Migration Board upon arrival in Sweden. However, they must request that their permit be issued before they travel to Sweden.

  • copies of marriage certificates or the equivalent (applies to married couples or registered partners)
