ProcedureEdit

Apply by Mail:

  1. To Apply for Registration of Intern Genetic Counsellors, the applicant must go to the Health Professions Council of South Africa’s (HPCSA) office Contact Link
  2. The application form must be obtained from the authorities at the HPCSA office, else the application form can be downloaded from the official website linked here Application Form Link
  3. The registration application must be submitted within 2 months of commencing the internship training.
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. The application form must be filled with all the necessary details, and along with the required documents, it must be sent via registered mail or through courier service to the HPCSA office.
  6. The mail or the courier must address to the Registrar of the HPCSA.
  7. The application will then be verified by the official at the HPCSA members.
  8. If the details and the documents submitted by the applicant is valid and legitimate, then the Intern Genetic Counsellors registration will be approved by the officials at the HPCSA.
  9. After completing the Internship as Genetic Counsellors, the applicant will be issued with the Certificate of confirmation of Intern Training by the HPCSA. Intern Certificate Link
  10. The registration fee must be paid along with the application which is R500.00, and the receipt must be attached along with the application.
  11. The complete fee details are given in the “Fees” section of this page.
  12. The processing time for the registration of the intern genetic counsellor will be intimated to the applicant after submitting the application.


Note: In case of non-compliant application, it will be rejected and sent back to the applicant.

  • Original B.Sc honours degree certificate or equivalent thereof (a copy will only be accepted if certified by an attorney in his/her capacity as NOTARY PUBLIC and bearing the official stamp or original Form 23 PHIN, duly completed).
  • A copy of identity document or birth certificate (for first time registration).
  • A copy of marriage certificate (should you wish to be register in your married surname).
  • Proof of payment.
  • In case of Non-SA Citizens - Letter of endorsement by the Foreign Workforce Management Programme of the Department of Health.

Note: Copies certified by a Commissioner of Oaths will not be accepted.

EligibilityEdit

To apply for the Genetic Counsellors Intern registration, the applicant should have

  • A four years’ formal education (B.Sc. Honours or equivalent) and successful completion of first year of study of the M.Sc. in Genetic Counselling from an accredited educational institution.
or
  • A successful completion of [M.Sc Link]. in Genetics Counselling degree from accredited educational institution.
