ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for Identity Document or Identity book in person, the person who intends to do so must visit any nearest office of the Department of Home Affairs.
  2. Please click on the following link for the contact details and address of the office of Department of Home affairs: Link Among the list of provinces, click on your province name and get the details accordingly.
  3. Go to the office of DHA and get the application for applying for an identity document (Form BI-9) from the concerned department.
  4. Complete the application form as required with relevant information. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  5. Once completed filling the application form, submit it along with all the required documents at the respective department in the office. Also pay the prompted fees at the office.
  6. The submitted form and attached documents will be put into necessary verification processes by concerned authorities.
  7. A full set of fingerprints will be recorded by a Home Affairs official and imprinted on Form DHA-9.
  8. Once when all the furnished information is found correct, your identity document will become ready to be collected.
  9. The applicant will be notified through SMS on their registered mobile number and instructed to collect the document at the DHA office.

FOR SA CITIZENS:

  • Certified copy of applicant’s Birth certificate or reference book
  • If not available, identity or travel documents copy of old TBVC states
  • Colour photographs (two numbers)


NATURALISED CITIZENS OR PERMANENT RESIDENT PERMIT HOLDERS:

  • Completely filled Form BI-1620
  • Naturalisation certificate and a copy of it
  • Exemption certificate and a copy of it
  • Completely filled Form BI-829 (if PRP or Exemption document not available)
  • PR certificate and a copy of it


Note: TBVC refers to Transkei, Bophutatswana, Venda or Ciskei homelands

EligibilityEdit

  • Any person, who is 16 years and older, is eligible to apply for an identity document (ID).
  • People (including spouses and children) who are working for the South African government or one of its statutory bodies outside of South Africa also qualify to receive South African ID books.


FeesEdit

  • The issuance of the first Identity document or book is free of charge.
  • Temporary Identity certificate: R70.00

InstructionsEdit

  • People residing outside the Republic and want apply for an identity document, should apply at the South African embassy or mission or consulate.
  • You must provide your cell phone number in your application so that you can receive regular updates on the progress of your application by SMS. To get the SMS updates, simply SMS the word “ID” followed by your ID number to 32551. You will be charged R1 for each SMS sent.
  • If the permanent residence permit or exemption certificate cannot be furnished, Form BI-829 must be completed for the issuing of a duplicate thereof. If the naturalization certificate cannot be furnished, you must apply for a duplicate prior to submitting the ID book application.

  • Any resident of SA republic will need an Identity Document to register for your matriculation exams, get a driving licence or open a bank account.

  • All first time applicants must be accompanied by their parents or one of the parents when applying for an ID card. The parents /legal guardians of first time applicants must bring along a certified copy of their IDs as well.
