ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for Renunciation of Citizenship in person, the applicant must visit any nearest office of the Department of Home Affairs or any South African Embassy, mission or consulate if you are overseas.
  2. Please click on the following link for the contact details and address of the office of Department of Home affairs: Link Among the list of provinces, click on your province name and get the details accordingly.
  3. Go to the office of DHA and obtain the application form for Renunciation or citizenship (DHA-246), from the concerned department. Or click the following link to download: Link
  4. Fill the relevant sections of the forms with appropriate details of the applicant and provide the proper reason for the application of Renunciation.
  5. Make sure that you have all the documents listed under the “Required documents” section of this page. Attach those documents with this application form.
  6. Once completed filling the application form, attest it with place and date. Then, submit it along with all the documents at the respective department in the office. Also pay the prompted fees at the office.
  7. The submitted form and attached documents will be put into necessary verification processes by concerned authorities. The authorities will check whether the provided information is appropriate and the documents are in order.
  8. The application will now be forwarded to the Director-General at the DHA office for Registration of Declaration. After that, the application will be processed further.
  9. Once when all the processes are done and the reason stated is found sufficient, the Minister of Home Affairs will make the necessary amendments for the exemption of Loss of South African citizenship.

  • Any South African or dual citizen, who intends to acquire citizenship of any other country, can apply to renounce his/her SA citizenship.
  • He/she should have already acquired the citizenship in the country that they desire or must have applied to acquire the citizenship, at least.

InstructionsEdit

  • A South African citizen who intends to accept the citizenship or nationality of another country, or who also has the citizenship or nationality of a country other than the Republic, may make a declaration in the prescribed form renouncing his or her South African citizenship.
  • The Minister shall upon receipt of a declaration made, cause such declaration to be registered in the manner prescribed, and thereupon the person who made the declaration shall cease to be a South African citizen.
