Apply In-Person:

  1. To Apply for Exchange Visa, the applicant must visit the South African Embassy or Consulate in the country that they are residing currently. List of SA embassies
  2. The application form can be downloaded from the official VFS global website linked here. Application Form Link
  3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. The application form must be filed with necessary details.
  5. Later, the application form and all the necessary documents should be submitted to the officials at the South African embassy.
  6. The application approval is entirely based on the visa officer decision.
  7. If the visa officer is satisfied with the details provided and the supporting documents submitted by the applicant, then the exchange visa will be approved, and the decision will be conveyed to the applicant.
  8. The application fee varies for different country. Therefore, the application fee details will be intimated to the applicant while applying.
  9. The processing time to get the exchange visa takes a maximum of 3 to 4 weeks.

  • A passport that is valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of the intended visit.
  • Proof of financial means to cover the duration of the stay.
    • Bank statements, or Travellers’ cheques.
  • Undertakings by the host in the SA.
  • Proof of medical cover.
  • A cash deposit equivalent to the value of a return ticket.
  • Medical report.
  • Radiology report.
  • Police clearance certificate.
  • A letter from the Department of Education or a public higher educational institution in the South Africa, confirming that it is responsible for organizing/administering the programme, outlining the activities and duration thereof, as well as confirming that it will take full responsibility for the student whilst he/she is in the country.
  • A letter from an organ of the foreign state, confirming the particulars of the student, including confirmation of the student’s registration with a tertiary educational institution abroad, as well as the date on which study will commence.
  • A letter from the organ of state confirming the status/existence of the exchange programme.
  • A letter from the educational institution abroad confirming your enrolment or a letter from the foreign state organ confirming your participation in the programme and their awareness of the exchange programme.
  • Annual reports from the sponsoring body, outlining progress of the programme. In the absence of a sponsoring body, the educational institution or organ of state must submit the reports.
  • A report from a South African organ of state or learning institution prescribed in regulation
  • A vaccination certificate, if required by law.
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or transiting through a yellow fever endemic area.
  • Proof of payment of the applicable fee.

EligibilityEdit

  • Any foreign applicants who are not older than 25 years of age and wishes to participate in any of the cultural, economic, or social exchange programmes administered by an organ of the State or a public higher educational institution in South Africa is eligible to apply for the exchange visa in the South African embassy.

  • The application fee varies for different country. Therefore, the application fee details will be intimated to the applicant while applying.



ValidityEdit

  • The exchange visa is generally valid for a maximum period of 12 months.
  • Also, the exchange visa cannot be renewed or extended for any reasons.
