ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for registering as a Tertiary Institution in person, the applicant has to make an application to the Minister of Education in this regard.
  2. If the applicant needs to register a University, the application can be made through National Universities Commission:Link
  3. If the applicant needs registration for a Polytechnic or College of Agriculture, the application should lodged throughthe National Board for Technical Education:Link
  4. If it is a College of Education, application is done through the National Commission for Colleges of Education:Link
  5. In any other case, the application should be made to the Director-General of the Federal Ministry of Education:Link
  6. Visit the office as per the requirement and obtain the forms to be completed for obtaining a registering a Tertiary Institution as applicable from the relevant department.
  7. Complete the application forms with appropriate information under relevant sections. Attest it with your signature once completed.
  8. Once completed filling the application form, make sure that you attached all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  9. Then, submit it in person to the Executive Secretary of the respective Board/Commission, at the office.
  10. Also, pay the required amount of fees (if any) for the application process and registration as directed by the officials.
  11. As a successive stage, the Standing Committee will organise an interactive meeting with the promoters of the proposed Institution as an introduction to the first verification visit to its campus site.
  12. At the end of the meeting, the promoters will have to submit a certain set of documents which can also be found in the “Required Documents” section.
  13. After submission, the application and other documents will be forwarded to relevant departments for verification process and sent back to the committee for onward transmission in case if the documents are not in order.
  14. Then, the first verification visit to the proposed university is performed as a prerequisite for the registration and also for the reviewing its documents thereby checking the commitment of the Proprietor.
  15. Based on the report of the first verification visit and the suggestions made by the officials, the promoters should make the necessary amendments which will be verified again during the second verification visit.
  16. During the second visit, the committee members will analyse the amendments suggested in the first verification report and also the financial status of the organizations as required.
  17. After that, a security screening of Proprietors and Board/Commission of Trustees of the Institution is conducted for ensuring their reliability. On the basis of the analysis made, the Standing Committee writes a comprehensive report to the respective Board/Commission for its consideration and further necessary action.
  18. After receiving the report from the Standing Committee, the Management recommends approval of the Institution to the Development Committee (DC) of the Board/Commission and also submits the report from Standing Committee.
  19. The Board/Commission will then forward the relevant reports to the Honourable Minister of Education after which the Federal Executive Council considers the recommendations and the institution is listed in Board/Commission’s publications as accredited/approved to operate in Nigeria.

  • An institution of Higher Education may be sponsored or owned by the Government of the Federation or of a State or Local Government.
  • It can also be sponsored or owned by a Company incorporated in Nigeria or individual or association of individuals.
  • Each person in the association must be a citizen of Nigeria.

InstructionsEdit

  • An applicant must notify the Commission about his/her intention about operating a University by compiling a written statement and sending it to the relevant authority in the commission.
  • After the verification visit, the proprietor of the tertiary institution may re-apply for approval to run or establish the institution when he/she has corrected all the deficiencies highlighted in the earlier report.
  • Applicants and representatives should take the fees amount for the application forms (as instructed) when they visit the office to collect the forms to be collected.
  • Submission of the required documents for universities should be at the instance of the Directorate of Establishment of Private Universities (DEPU).
  • Applicants are advised to complete the application form neatly and completely with absolute legibility and appropriateness to avoid rejections. Also, all the required documents must be furnished completely.

  • Any entity must obtain a registration from the relevant Educational Board/Commission if it wants to operate a Tertiary Institution like University, Polytechnic/Monotechnic Institution, College of Education, inside the Republic of Nigeria on its own.
