ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person

  1. To apply for Import a Deceased / Dead Bodyin person, the applicant must visit the Port Health Services unit of the Federal Ministry of Health.
  2. Click on the following link to find the address and contact details of the Federal Ministry of Health: contact link
  3. Visit the unit at the office and obtain an application form for obtaining a Waiver for Repatriation for Corpse from the relevant official.
  4. Make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. Complete the application form as applicable to the requirement with appropriate and required information about the deceased person and the applicant.
  6. After completing, the applicant should attest the form with date and the Application form along with all the documents (as required) must be submitted at the office.
  7. Collect the Waiver from the office after receiving the intimation that it is ready to be collected.
  8. Then, the responsible person in the other country has to make arrangements for the transportation of the mortal remains through any means as applicable.
  9. The applicant or the person in the other country can seek help about arranging transportation from the Nigerian representative in their country.
  10. An official will be allocated for assistance and he/she will direct the person for getting the necessary things done and required documents arranged.
  11. Follow the instructions and complete the required processes and obtain the required documents.
  12. He/she will also instruct/help about getting quotes for the processes and documents. Do as directed and pay the necessary fees as well.
  13. The applicant must make necessary arrangements for receiving the deceased/dead body arriving from abroad.
  14. The applicant should also keep everything ready for the funeral service and burial/cremation of the deceased. This way, the import of a deceased/dead body into Nigeria will be done appropriately.

  • Deceased person’s proof as a Nigerian citizen
  • Applicant’s Identification Card
  • Proof of Residence
  • Proof of Death (if required)

For importing:

  • Corpse Responsibility Undertaking letter from family member in Nigeria
  • Passport of the Decedent
  • Death Certificate
  • Embalming Certificate/Laisser-Passez
  • Certificate of Cremation

  • Any authorised representative of the family member or relatives can also apply.

InstructionsEdit

  • Applicants are advised to complete the application form neatly and completely with absolute legibility and appropriateness to avoid rejections. Also, all the required documents must be furnished completely.
  • The applicant can obtain the importation permit for the deceased body from the Federal Ministry of Health by following a prescribed procedure.
  • The Cremation Certificate, Certificate of Embalming and Burial permit are expected to be issued by the funeral homes or mortuaries.
  • In addition, the Nigerian Government may require a Certificate acting as an evidence for the disinfection from any authorised health facility of the country of export.
