ProcedureEdit

  • Applicants are advised to apply one month before the expiration date of the current registration license
  • Tea Buyer means a person, company or a firm engaged in acquiring manufactured tea for sale in local or export market, including the export of imported tea.
  • Tea Exporter means a person, a firm, or a corporate body engaged in the business of exporting of tea.
  • Tea Importer means a person, a firm, or a corporate body engaged in the business of importing tea.

Apply Online

  1. To renew your registration as a Tea Buyer/Exporter/ Importer in Kenya, one has to make a formal online application with the Tea Directorate of the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA).
  2. This can be done by visiting the Agriculture and Food Authorities’ Website and clicking on the "Dealers" option under the "Portal" option in the menu.
  3. This will direct you to the next page where you are to click on the Tea Portal link, this will lead toy to the next page where you can start to make your application. .
  4. Login in if you already have an account with the Tea Directorate of the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA).
  5. If you don’t have an account, click on the ”Click here to register” link so as to begin your online registration and renewal process.
  6. On the next page you are supposed to select the year you wish to register for and select the category you wish to apply for using the dropdown menu. Choose the financial year you wish to apply for and in the “Select category you wish to register for” select “Tea Buyer/Exporter/ Importer Renewal”.
  7. By selecting the “Tea Buyer/Exporter/ Importer Renewal” a checklist of documents for the renewal as a Tea Buyer/Exporter/ Importer will pop up. The checklist of information that will be required to complete your application. You should proceed when you have all the information ready.
  8. A list of required documents is also mentioned in the “Required Document” section of this page.
  9. Details of the fee payable area also displayed. The fee is payable only after the registration has been vetted and approved. Please do not apply a payment until you are requested to do so.
  10. Click on “proceed” to go to the next page.
  11. On the next page fill in the required information for renewal as a Tea Buyer/Exporter/ Importer. This includes the applicant details and Organization details.
  12. After filling the information click on “Save applicant’s details”. This will prompt an email to be sent to your email address.
  13. Log-in to your email address to verify your account (if you don’t have an account). After verifying your account, upload the required documents.
  14. After you have uploaded the documents you will receive a message informing you that your renewal application is under review and you will be contacted once the application is approved.
  15. Once your renewal application is approved you will receive communication in your email address and your AFA Tea Directorate e-Portal informing you on the progress and payment details.
  16. Proceed to make the payment for renewal. The amount of fees to be paid can be found under the "Fees" section of this page, the amount will also be sent to your email address and your AFA Tea Directorate e-Portal
  17. Submit your proof of payment in your AFA Tea Directorate e-Portal account by logging into your account and uploading the proof of payment receipt.
  18. Once the proof of payment is verified a copy of the registration certificate will be sent to your AFA Tea Directorate e-Portal account which you can print or retrieve anytime.

  • The fee is payable only after the registration has been vetted and approved. Please do not apply a payment until you are requested to do so.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • The renewal application allows a person or institution to continue engage in the buying, exporting and importing of tea in Kenya.
  • One cannot operate the buying , exporting and importing of tea in Kenya unless they are registered by the Tea Directorate of the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA)

  • Before granting any Registration, the Board shall, in respect of an application before it, satisfy itself-
  • that the applicant is a company incorporated under the Companies Act, with such minimum share capital as the Board may prescribe; and
  • that the applicant has the necessary management capacity to carry on tea buying/exporting and importing business for which the Registration is required; and
  • that the applicant has sufficient knowledge, experience and capacity to conduct tea buying/importing/exporting business and that the persons engaged or to be engaged in the position of Chief Executive Officer or other senior position possess sufficient knowledge, management experience and capacity.

About Tea Directorate

  • The Tea Directorate was formed following the repeal of the Tea (Amendment) Act, 2011 , following the commencement of the Crops Act, 2013 on 1st August 2014.

  1. License tea manufacturing factories;
  2. Register buyers, Warehousemen,
  3. Manufacturers and any other person dealing in tea;
  4. Promote Kenya tea in both the local and the international markets.
