ProcedureEdit

The certificate for registration as a tea broker shall be renewable annually to the Tea Board office, at least thirty (30) days before the expiration of the current registration certificate.

Apply Online Step 1: Register with the Tea Portal ( For New Users)

  1. Applicant should browser the TBK Portal
  2. On the Home page, users already registered, should type in their email address and password to sign into the TBK Portal.
  3. Those without an account should hover the mouse cursor over the “ Click here to register” hyperlink located on the bottom of the homepage and click on it.
  4. The “Register for Online Service” window will pop up, select the year and the category you wish to apply for using the dropdown i.e “Tea Broker Renewal” then click on the “Proceed” button.
  5. This will navigate the applicant to the “Stakeholder Registration” page, populate all fields accurately before clicking on the “ Save application details” button.
  6. Upon successful submission of the registration request, the applicant will receive a Registration submission notification on their device.
  7. This will cause a confirmation email link to be sent to the applicant's email address.
  8. Applicants should log into their email address and confirm/activate the registration by clicking on the hyperlink provided, in the email which has been sent to him/her to complete the registration process.


Step 2: Renew the Tea Broker Registration.

  1. Once logged in the portal, locate the Tea Broker Registration online renewal form, Populate all the available fields accurately, provided all required information relevant to the application, upload all the supporting documentation and then check the Accept Terms and Conditions of Use thereafter before clicking on the “ Submit” button. All documents to be attached must be in pdf format.
  2. Upon successful submission, the applicant will receive a Registration submission notification on their device.


Step 3: Payment of the renewed registration certificate fee

  1. Once submitted the application will be vetted for approval by AFA's Tea Board licensing committee.
  2. After a successful document evaluation phase, the application is approved and the applicant is sent a payment notification via email requesting him/her to make payment of the renewal registration fee of Kshs.10,000.00 as per the board's preferable payment mode. Please refer to the “Fees” section of this page for more information.
  3. Upon making payment, the applicant is required to share the proof of payment (payment details) with the Directorate, applicant will then receive a payment confirmation notification.


Step 4: Obtain the Renewed Registration Certificate

  1. The applicant will be sent a tea broker registration license to print. Applicants should log in to their TBK account to access and download the certificate.


NOTE:
  • All renew applications will be subjected to an integrity vetting process and any false information provided by the applicants or other integrity issues will lead to prosecution and cancellation of the license.
  • A person who is aggrieved by the decision of the Authority in respect of a grant, refusal, renewal, or variation of a license may appeal to the Cabinet Secretary within 30 days from the date on which the applicant received notice of the decision.

  • Any person with a valid/expired tea broker registration certificate is eligible to apply.

  • Registration Fee: KES 10,000.00


Note: The fee is payable only after the registration has been vetted and approved. Please do not apply for payment until requested to do so, by the tea board.

Payment for the registration certificate can be made via MPESA Paybill number 888343 and the account name will be the name of the exporter or the exporting company's name.

  • Direct Bank Deposit


Payment should be deposited into the AFA Tea Directorate account at National Bank Ltd. A/C No: 01003000544300.

ValidityEdit

  • The tea broker registration certificate is valid for a financial year beginning 1st July to 30th June.

The Tea Directorate was formed following the repeal of the Tea (Amendment) Act, 2011, following the commencement of the Crops Act, 2013 on 1st August 2014.

The mandate of the Tea Directorate

  • License tea manufacturing factories;
  • Register buyers, Warehousemen,
  • Manufacturers and any other person dealing in tea;
  • Promote Kenya tea in both the local and the international markets.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • A Tea Broker is a person or company or firm established for the purpose of negotiating the purchase or sale of tea between producers and buyers.
  • One cannot operate as a tea broker in Kenya unless they are registered and licensed by the tea directorate of the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA). Therefore dealers need to renew their certificates to continue with operations.

  • The licensing authority shall issue licenses to applicants subject to such lawful conditions as the authority may determine.
  • Every license shall specify the premises upon which the business specified in the license may be carried on.
  • Licenses issued shall remain in force until the thirtieth of June next following the date of issue, unless earlier cancelled.
  • There shall be fees payable for the issue of licenses under this Act. Such fees are as the licensing authority may prescribe.
  • The total fees charged will depend on the turnover of the dealer and shall not overburden small-scale dealers and the cumulative total of all levies and fees payable shall in any event not exceed ten percent of the gate value of the agricultural or aquatic product.
