Procedure

Apply Online

1. To Renew a Driver’s License Online, the applicant should make the application through the Kenya E-Citizen portal via this E-Citizen.
2. Open a browser e.g Mozilla firefox or google chrome and key in e-Citizen Portal
3. On the Home page, hover the mouse cursor over the “Create an Account” tab, to register for an account.
4. New users can register either as “Kenyan citizens” or “ Foreign Residents”. Select the applicable one.
5. Applicants should populate all the available fields accurately on the registration page, as explained below.
6. Enter Identification Card Number and First name as it appears on the applicant’s Identification Card.
7. Then the applicant should enter his/her email address and password and confirm the password. (Please use a valid email address as all notifications and applications status will be sent to the specified address)
8. A confirmation link will be sent to the applicant’s email address along with the activation notification.
9. Then the applicant should open his/her email address and click on the activation link to log in to his/her account.
10. Then the applicant should enter his/her mobile phone number and a verification code will be sent to the applicant’s phone.
11. Enter the mobile verification code sent on the next screen and click on verify.
12. Finally, Skip or Upload the required photo to complete the registration process.
13. Once the applicant has registered with E-Citizen, log in to the E-Citizen account and click on the “National Transport and Safety Authority” tab, and then click on the “Continue” button to go to the National Transport and Safety Authority dashboard.
14. On the dashboard, the applicant can view his/her recent application if there are any, and then click on the “Make Application” button to go to the applications page.
15. Then the applicant should click on the “DRIVING LICENSES” dropdown menu.
16. Then there will be two options for the renewal of a driving license.
17. A three-year license renewal that costs Ksh1400.
18. A one-year license at Ksh600.Note that the National Transport and Safety Authority charges a mandatory fee of Ksh50 convenience fee in addition to the renewal charges.
19. Then confirm the driving license renewal details and click on the “Apply Now” button and submit.
20. Once submitted, choose the preferred method of payment and pay the renewal fee.
21. Upon making the payment, the National Transport and Safety Authority will process the application and send the renewed driver’s license slip to the applicant.
22. Then the applicant should go to his/her E-Citizen account and print the renewed driver’s license slip.

Eligibility

• Individuals (drivers) whose driving license has expired are eligible to apply.

Fees

• A three years license at Ksh1400.
• A one-year license at Ksh600.

Note that the National Transport and Safety Authority charges a mandatory fee of Ksh50 convenience fee in addition to the renewal charges.

Validity

• A driver’s license is valid for one or three years.
