Adoption is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting for another and, in effect, permanently transfers all rights and responsibilities, along with filiation, from the biological parent or parents.

The law on adoption followed in Belgium came into effect September 1st, 2005 and stipulates that every person who wants to adopt a child must follow the preparation organized by the competent community.
